GOP’s Worst Nightmare: Electoral Stalemate, Constitutional crisis
Townhall ^ | May 23, 2012 | Michael Medved

Posted on 05/23/2012 7:04:42 AM PDT by LucianOfSamasota

This column originally appeared in THE DAILY BEAST.

In looking ahead toward the November election, Republican strategists should take proactive steps to avoid a damaging, dangerous conclusion to the presidential race and to prevent the very real chance that Mitt Romney will win the Electoral College even while losing the popular vote badly to Barack Obama.

The problem stems from the lopsided margins President Obama will surely pile up in a few uncontested states with big populations, including California, New York, Illinois and Massachusetts. Mr. Romney, meanwhile, will prevail by comparable margins in only relatively small states: Utah, Idaho, the Dakotas, Alabama and Alaska. The big states that offer Romney his most plausible path to Electoral College victory will be won by much smaller margins, leaving Obama with a clear popular vote advantage.

Seems likely the 'legal professor' will stir up trouble when he has to step down. He hasn't shown any propensity for putting the nation first up to now.

There is no issue here at all.

The Constitution clearly set up the electoral selection process for the President in order to allow states to have sway in the selection of a President.

The only ones who have issue are those who do not support the Constitution, i.e. - Democrats.

An electoral stalemate between competing pro-choice democrat socialists.

How exciting!

How about we try something different, eh?

The dimwit lib asshats always are such poor losers. I believe that stems from the fact that they are generic losers. When they lose an election it becomes nakedly apparent that they are losers in all ways. That reality is too much for themn to bear.

I don’t see the nightmare or the stalemate. Our presidential “election” is actually 51 separate smaller elections. The race is for the most electoral votes. The popular vote “winner” is really a media creation.

Besides, I think Medved’s doomsday scenario where Obama gets a significantly higher percentage of the popular vote is unlikely.

Michael, for cripe’s sake. How about some goddam optimism for once! I feel an undercurrent equivalent to the mood and quiet determination I felt in the final days before we removed Jimmy Carter from office.

Every fiber of my being tells me this tyrant and his ogres can't keep the lies together all the way to November. They are so patently obvious now in their machinations that even ‘some’ of the more sane Democrats are cringing at the thought of having to defend his sorry ass to their friends.

I think his leech base will be too self-absorbed in their quest for largess they'll eschew voting for other endeavors, and that while conservatives aren't happy with mediocre Mitt, they'll take one for the team when it comes down to it.

In the end, we win a little, or we lose it all. Because this SKIDMARK on the US Constitution will pull out all the stops if he is allowed to remain.

[BTW, for those of you who aren't that familiar with the colloquial connotations of ‘skidmark,’ please see “sh!tstain” in the dictionary]

The only factor driving this scenario — as it did in 2000 — is the two big guaranteed states — NY and CA will go hugely for Obama while most of the rest of the country will be split between the two.

But... that’s why we have the EV system in place. If Obama comes up on the short end of that score... well, it sucks to be him.

I’m more concerned for an electoral tie.......

http://usgovinfo.about.com/od/thepoliticalsystem/a/electiontie.htm

Depending on the HOR makeup, it could drag into March or beyond.....

We are a republic, hence the electoral college. Pure democracy would suck. And we are seeing why it would be bad in the possible outcome mentioned in this article.

I have no doubt that we will see a renewed call
for popular voting and to do away with the
“outmoded’ EV system.
The founders set it up this way for a reason
and their reasons have stood the test of time.
If we thought Algore was Soreloserman, we
haven’t seen anything like the kind of tactics
Obama and his minions will employ.

What they are doing is trying to make sure even after BO loses that the Democrats can charge voter fraud or say that the popular vote was for obama so they can gin up the hate for Romney’s new Admin. And if they can’t contest in some states and steal enough votes to overturn the results they will have the black communities stirred up into riots.

I was surprised to see that Michael Medved wrote this.

Michael Medved is conservative. He’s one of the leading voices on Salem Radio Network talk shows.

Why is a conservative worried about problems with the electoral vote vs. popular vote?

To turn it around, would Obama and Democrats have any angst if Obama lost the popular vote but won the electoral vote????

It’s not going to be a problem - Folks aren’t happy with the gay marriage thing... Obama’s not going to win.

For God’s sake, the Constitution provides a mechanism for choosing the president if no candidate gets a majority: the House chooses the president, voting by states.

This is not a “constitutional crisis.” Quite the contrary, it’s the Constitution functioning as intended.

That's what I think. Four more years at 1600 is nothing compared to the rest of your life in that sweet gig Jesse Jackson has had for four decades.

Michael Medved is conservative.

You don't have to scratch Medved very deeply to find "big government thug".

What's his solution? For the GOP nominee to preemptively concede before the election "for the good of the country"?
