A New Mexico slaughterhouse has petitioned the federal government to become the first business to offer horse meat for human consumption since an effective ban on the practice ended last year, according to state officials and animal welfare groups.
Those groups said last week they are rallying to try to block the slaughterhouses petition, hoping to head off what they fear could be a series of slaughterhouses applying to produce horse meat

What’s wrong with eating horsemeat? Not my thing, but it’s an old American tradition if you can believe it. Anyway, I suspect the market is overseas.

Ick. Horsemeat is definitely not for me. Too similar to eating dogs or cats IMO.

Europe considers it a delicacy in many countries. I suspect many were eaten during the various wars there, also.

Belgium and France mainly. Personally, I don't think it's a very good meat. I would rather have pig, cow, or game. But to each their own.

That is actually needed.
Ongoing drought and ongoing economic crisis.
Can't feed 'em, can't sell 'em.
A lot of people just turn 'em loose. That is something you don't want the bumper of your Prius to find at 70 MPH in the middle of the night.

So, just exactly what is wrong with turning your old or no longer affordable horse loose in a national forest to starve to death?
Isn't that the American way?

hoping to head off what they fear could be a series of slaughterhouses applying to produce horse meat Horses produce horse meat, slaughterhouses process it.
Slaughtering horses is better than letting them starve to death or letting taxpayers spend millions to keep Mustangs alive in feeding pens.

Just a matter of the age of the animal when slaughtered. Old work horses really do have some stringy meat. Young puppies on the other hand, or the other one for that matter, work out well.
Still, what meat you eat, or whether or not to eat meat, is a personal choice. We are, after all, a meat eating animal.

First, the political/regulator class bans the slaughter of horses for dog food (according them, years ago), then they okay the large scale slaughtering of horses to feed you.

That Prius is going to need a pretty good tailwind to get it to 70 mph. I bet it'd go faster if it had an external combustion engine like the Volt.

When I was stationed in Italy, I lived with an Italian family. The nearby horse meat house, was called the Cavalli....(horse) in Italian. Since I lived with them, I would assume at some point I ate horse meat, since I ate most dinners with them.

So, just exactly what is wrong with turning your old or no longer affordable horse loose in a national forest to starve to death?Well that's what people are doing now -- or spending ridiculous amounts of money hiring backhoes or cremating their horses. Slaughtering would seem to make far more sense.

Whats wrong with eating horsemeat? Beat's me.
I've been riding horses for most of my life, and I see nothing wrong with eating them.

Just one more group of people thinking they have the right to impose their food choices on another group of people. No different than the left telling people they can’t eat pate or sugar.
