Another curious development in post war Japan was orphanages for old folks. There were several of these big dormitories, with little food and no heat, near where we lived. Young Japanese families typically keep their elderly at home. With the loss of so many young men in the war, the old folks were more or less destitute.
My dad's Shrine Club adopted one of the orphanages and provided charcoal and food from the Army Commissary and clothing from the PX.

Interestingly, this Veteran’s day was meant to honor the dead of the German Army since 1956 only, especially those lost in Afghanistan.
Strangely, the Daily Mail does not mention this little detail...
However, most of the DM reader’s comments with lots of green points were very humane and mild.
Bless the hearts of all those who wrote and rated them.
