DALLAS -- Dallas police are still investigating a shooting involving an armored car driver in the 2300 block of West Davis Street.

News 8 has confirmed that the driver arrived at the Checks Cashed business around 9:45 a.m. and was ambushed by a man who shot him upon opening the door of the vehicle.

Police say the robber was hiding and waiting.

"It looks like he was delivering some currency, and it looks like perhaps he was ambushed by the suspect, who was waiting at the bus stop."

Despite being struck in the arm, the armored car driver was able to return fire, hitting the suspect several times, who later died of his injuries.

The driver of the armored truck was reportedly grazed.

The second driver jumped out of the truck with her weapon drawn and held the suspect at gunpoint until Dallas police arrived on the scene. Dunbar armored drivers are trained to stay inside the truck during a robbery situation.

One bullet went through the window of the check cashing business, causing bystanders to jump for cover. No one inside was injured.

People at a nearby diner saw the shooting and could not believe what they were seeing.

“I thought I saw a gentleman fall down,” said Ray Beasley, witness. “That’s what I thought at first, and ran out the door of the Metro Grill and it turns out I saw the armored truck driver open the door and hold the guy down with a gun. Then I realized it was a robbery.”

There was a similar incident a few weeks ago where the suspects ambushed the armored truck guards, but those suspects were never caught. No word on if these robberies are connected.

Marjorie Owens and Shannon Powell contributed to this story.

It just so happens that I was just looking at a list of Old West outlaws. Geez, what a phone book. Fortunately the lists are alphabetized.

N.B.: On the lower right corner of the page is an old picture of the lynching of one brutal robber-murderer John Heath, who on receiving only a life sentence from a liberal judge, was strung up by the populace of Tombstone. Heck of a story:

http://www.legendsofamerica.com/we-johnheath.html

“We the undersigned, a jury of inquest, find that John Heath came to his death from emphysema of the lungs—a disease common in high altitudes—which might have been caused by strangulation, self-inflicted or otherwise.”

The armored truck driver cut short the career of an aspiring University of Chicago professor.

Story for the modern ages, proof that not everybody is a push over in today’s world.

An earlier article said he was shot because he tried to cash a check without two forms of ID.

My old ‘hood. Some parts are seeing a comeback, but obviously the same old elements are at work there.

The result of "a suspended sentence".

Or:

“Here lies Les Moore.
Took 4 slugs from a 44.
No Les. No Moore.”
