The fierce debate over women's access to contraception is far from over this year, but Democrats this week are claiming victory in the fight's early round.
The Democratic National Committee (DNC) on Saturday shot an email to supporters highlighting President Obama's recent plan to provide female workers even those employed by Catholic hospitals, universities and charities free access to birth control.
An angry backlash against an earlier version of that plan led Obama to tweak the proposal Friday by shifting the cost burden for contraceptives from the church-backed employers to the insurance companies.
"President Obama has set a standard that every woman has a right to contraception coverage at no additional cost," the DNC email says, "and he's done it in a way that respects religious freedoms."
An accompanying YouTube video, which includes excerpts from Obama's Friday press conference announcing the change, aims to highlight the sharp distinction between the president's compromise and a proposal being drafted by Republicans to repeal the birth-control mandate for employers.
"Who do you think should make decisions about contraception?" the ad asks. "You, or your employer?"
The Democrats are hoping not only to rally favor from liberals who are widely supportive of protecting women's access to contraception, but also to allay any fears that Catholic Democrats might have about Obama's new policy.
Although studies indicate that contraception use among Catholic women is nearly universal, the pill, condoms and other forms of birth control are forbidden under Catholic doctrine a policy reinforced Friday when the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops issued a statement condemning Obama's compromise plan.
"All the other mandated 'preventive services' prevent disease, and pregnancy is not a disease," the bishops said.
Meanwhile, House GOP leaders are crafting legislation to overturn Obama's mandate. Rep. Fred Upton (R-Mich.), chairman of the Energy and Commerce Committee, said Wednesday that the panel will vote in the coming weeks to repeal the new requirement.
This is part of the Kenyan’s plan to kill off private insurance. Declaring “free” contraceptives and no premium increase does not compute.
Talk about unconstitutional mandate...
Well, yes it involves religious freedom, but ask yourself if you would support a presidential mandate that all insurance companies provide free eye exams and glasses. That’s certainly a health care issue that affects most Americans. Even those who don’t need glasses still need periodic exams, right?
In order to do business, the company is obligated to provide something free. I equate this to extortion. Apply it to other businesses. What if all gas stations were obligated to provide free oil changes, or grocery stores were obligated to give out free bread? It’s the same thing. Now a lot of Americans might like free bread and oil changes, but it didn’t work in the Soviet Union and won’t work in America.
BTW, what about people who are opposed to abortion drugs for non-religious reasons?
Dear Lord,
Please let this abomination be struck down in it’s entirety when SCOTUS decides this case in June. Then we’ll be rid of this monster-for now.
We ought to make the ‘rats personally pay for all the “free” stuff they buy votes with.
But he is the Obastard (who is not bound by any law) and he does it anyway. For now.
Soon the day of reckoning will be here.
Throw in some circus tickets and you're on....
The RATS have really crossed a line with this whole health care thing. Whether it is morning after pills or toe fungus cream..why is the Federal Govt able to use all their power to force individuals, employers and insurance companies to supply anything free? This needs to be fast tracked to the Supreme Court..plus these outrageous people need to be voted out of office. This is the first issue that got my wife to write all our Congresscritters at the same time.

Nice!
Wait until he orders that electric cars be insured without cost.
I hear you friend. I am so furious about this, more than I have EVER been about anything so far that Obama has ever done. I have to pray constantly not to let Satan tempt me, and teach me to hate. I have to fight against this with everything my will can muster and rely on the Lord for the grace not to hate this man and those of his ilk.
I prayed for Obama today for the very first time. Only God Himself can save him from the fires of hell. Knowing what I have heard and read about hell, I can’t wish it on anyone, no matter how blinding mad I get.
Texas Fossil: “You are talking about Obozos spin fix, not the original problem.”
Not really. What about non-religious people who don’t think abortion is moral? Is this really about freedom of religion or private property rights? I think the latter.
Granted, the states and federal government have been doing this for years. This just happens to be more blatant. Governments have mandated that insurance companies cover certain things for some time. I don’t see myself getting pregnant...ever...but in some states I can’t buy a policy that doesn’t cover maternity care.

It’s one thing to say an insurance company has to honor the policies it writes, keep a certain amount of funding available to pay claims, etc. It’s something else (for government) to force a company to cover certain things as a price for doing business. It’s also not the same thing for government to mandate I have to buy something I don’t want in order to get what I do want. Even worse, there’s absolutely nothing in the US Constitution that gives the federal government the right to intrude in this.
Victory is exactly what it is unless we the people overturn it.
Somebody with greater computer skills than I should morph debbie blabbermouth-shiite’s head onto Baghdad Bob’s body.
True, and thankfully, more groups of other faiths ARE speaking out about it.

Those people don't even bother with contraception, so it won't affect them at all.
Could someone please photoshop a picture of an imperious looking Nancy Pelosi dressed as the Pope?
Subterfuge.
The original problem is not about birth control. The original problem is an issue of Freedom of Religion. An issue so important to our founders that it was written in the 1st Amendment to the Constitution. They stated that those right were granted by God, not the government. It is not the government's to remove...Ever.

Yep, screw anyone, anywhere, at no extra cost.
