Support Gun Rights: BUYcott Starbucks on February 14
The Truth About Guns ^ | 1-24-2012 | Robert Farago

Posted on 02/11/2012 5:47:15 AM PST by Vaquero

The National Gun Victims Action Council has declared a Valentine’s Day boycott of Starbucks to protest the coffee chain’s support for American gun laws. TTAG Commentator Greg in Allston has a counter-proposal, as originated by Sebastian and gay cynic . . .

“OK everyone, let’s have some real fun, shall we? Good! Listen up and please hear me out. The antis are planning a boycott. Let’s counter with a BUYcott. On February14, please make the effort to go to Starbucks and buy something. Don’t like their coffee? Get a tea, a cocoa, a pastry, anything. Thank the clerk for Starbucks’ support of the Constitution. And here’s the cool bit . . .

Pay with two dollar bills. Thomas Jefferson, Mr. Liberty himself. If Starbucks sees a huge influx of payment in two dollar bills, people in general, and Starbucks management in particular, are sure to notice.

Why the day before and the day after you ask? Simply to show that we have the power (financial, organizational and political) and the wherewithal to absolutely swamp anything that the antis can muster. Bomb Starbucks with 2A love and money. Three days in a row. What’s it going to cost you? Twenty bucks tops.

There’s a Starbucks a block away from where I work in Cambridge. I plan on giving them a little extra business.

the $2 bill for the 2nd Amendment (let the protesters pay for things with their appropriate $3 bills.)

Ditto. The nominee at the GOP convention should call for a 20% tip when dining out. Easy to calculate and they will notice. The nominee can also call for Democrats to counter with a 25% tip-also easy to calculate. It will send a message to working people about who has their concerns. The Dems are not big tippers to begin with but they sure like embarrasing Pubs’ so turnabout is fair play.

Why dumb?

Way back when I was a student at Clemson University, Georgia Tech refused to alternate where we played our annual football game- we always played in Atlanta and Clemson wanted to play at Clemson every other year. GA Tech chose to end the series rather than change, so when we played that last game in Atlanta, all of the Clemson fans converted their cash to $2 bills (back when everyone paid in cash!)and spent them wherever they ate, shopped etc. It garnered a great deal of attention and made our point. I'm not sure when the series picked back up, but they do alternate now. It was fun and harmless, but it did draw attention to the issue.

I might hit Starbucks this week - the most aggravating part will be going to the bank to get $2 bills, if they even have them.

I can’t speak for the other poster, but I would say it’s dumb because a no dollar bill would be much more effective than a 2 dollar bill.

If you want to effectively protest Starbucks, do like me: don’t ever, never, even once, spend any money at all there.

I stopped at the Houston AP USO and had a cup of coffee there. The coffee, I was surprised to hear, was supplied by Starbucks.

I live near Monticello. When you visit they give you your change in $2 bills. I’m going to go, get some $2 bills and go to Dunkin Donuts.

If you are going to do this, Starbucks has a “secret menu” that some or all stores will serve on request. Note that not all of their stores will serve all of these, may likely use other names for them, and will certainly charge a lot for them, so be sure to ask the price, first.

Here is a compiled list of Starbucks “secret menu”:

Zebra Mocha (combination of white-chocolate and chocolate mocha)

Red-Tux aka Bleeding Penguin (Mocha w/raspberry flavoring)

Chocolate Dalmatian (java chips and chocolate chips to a white chocolate mocha)

Raspberry Cheesecake (white chocolate mocha is added with a few shots of raspberry. Whipped cream and vanilla sprinkles are optional)

Nutella (Cafe Misto with a shot of both chocolate and hazelnut syrup, along with a real drop of caramel)

Three C’s (Cinnamon Dolce latte + Caramel syrup + Chocolate mocha syrup)

Short Cappuccino (Italian style. Less milk and a stronger flavor)

Cafe au Lait (Misto without foam)

Marble Mocha Macchiato (White mocha on the bottom with no whip, shot on the top and mocha drizzle)

Short Drink (Just a small coffee)

Cheapo (A double shot of espresso on ice with few packs of brown sugar)

The Dirty Hippy (Chai Tea Latte with soy instead of regular milk)

Dirty Chai (Chai latte (hot or iced) with a shot of espresso)
Double Dirty or Extra Dirty (two shots)

Widow Maker (Half iced black tea, half iced black coffee)

London Fog (Earl Grey tea w/vanilla flavoring)

Poor Man’s Latte (An Iced Americano with no water and half ice and then add the half and half available at the milk and condiments table)

Poor Man’s Chai Latte (Chai Tea Misto with extra foam, two tea bags and half cinnamon-half vanilla syrup)

Apple Juice Orange Blossom (Tazo Orange Blossom Tea steeped in steamed apple juice with no water)

Red Eye (Coffee plus 1 shot of espresso)
Black Eye (Coffee plus 2 shots of espresso)
Green Eye (Coffee plus 3 shots of espresso)

French Pressed Coffee (any coffee)(highly recommended)

Frappuccinos:

Affogato-Style (Order any Frappe “affogato-style” and you’ll get a shot of hot espresso added on top of your drink as opposed to having it blended in)
Banana Cream Pie (Vanilla Bean creme with vanilla and hazelnut syrups, whipped cream, and a whole banana)
Biscotti
Cake Batter
Captain Crunch (hazelnut or toffee nut syrup in a Strawberries and Creme)
Chocolate Cream
Cinnamon Roll
Cookies & Cream
Crunch Berry
Grasshopper (Mocha with java chips and peppermint syrup)
Samoa (mocha coconut with caramel drizzle
Snickers (Java Chip with two pumps of toffee nut and a caramel drizzle)
Super Cream
Thin Mint (Tazo Green Tea Creme with chocolate syrup and java chips)

Um, I think you are missing the point. This isn’t a protest of Starbucks. It’s a show of support for their pro-2nd stance. The antis are protesting them...

"Why dumb?"

Because minor boycotts poorly organized and scarcely advertised through amateur efforts on the web by obscure organizations always fail to have any impact whatsoever.

I'm sure EVERYONE (/s) is going to make special trips to their banks just to get two-dollar bills...if the bank even has them.

Then, too, Starbuck's clientele is mostly liberal skulls full of caffeine and crappy, overpriced pastries. These nerdy lounge-lizards who hang at Starbucks playing with their lap-tops won't be paying with two-dollar bills even if they knew or cared about any "boycott".

So, I don't think the company is too worried about losing some huge portion of their customer base....customers who don't hang in their stores, anyhow.

When all is said and done, and Starbucks counts up the number of two-dollar bills tendered that day, they'll laugh and say "so much for conservative 'boycotts' "....which is NOT the hoped-for result.

When something has "epic fail" written all over it, I call it dumb to get excited about. It brings to mind the cardinal rule for attorneys in a trial.... "if you don't know the answer, don't ask the question".

This all being said, if it makes anyone feel better to waste a lot of time going to the bank and then sitting in Starbucks on Valentine's Day sipping burned-brown water paid for with two-dollar bills, I say "go for it". No harm....and why NOT swell the store's crowd as part of the 'boycott'.

That'll show 'em.....

I see this is actually a counter-counter boycott of sorts. My post above still stands with variations which I'm not going to take the time and trouble to amend.

I still think it's dumb, will never create a tsunami, and a waste of time one way or another.

In fact, I'm going to spend my Saturday afternoon not going to JCPenney's at my neighborhood mall.
