Newt has the gift. Just wish he’d been more consistent since ‘94.

While Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House, earmarks nearly doubled to $14.5 billion.

Chart of federal civilian employees...big decline under the Newtster, even while the economy was booming. The decline leveled off post-Newtster. We can see the Carter/Bush eras saw declines in their recessions but Newt kept it going in good economic times.

“earmarks nearly doubled to $14.5 billion”

Is that you Mitt?

No really, this is the least important issue, in fact it isn’t even an issue except with morons who do not understand the Constitution.

Newt’s speech was DYNAMITE!!!

Folks got out of their seats, stood and applauded.

I didn’t see the other speeches for long; therefore, I can’t compare.

Newt is the only one who says what he is going to do to rectify the bad situation the U.S. is in and how he is going to get there.

The rest leave out the second part out. They never offer a solution.

I wish people could get some perspective!
Earmarks are utterly insignificant compared to entitlements!
The US turning into the collapsing Eurozone will be due to lack of entitlement reform not lack of earmark reform!

“While Newt Gingrich was Speaker of the House, earmarks nearly doubled to $14.5 billion.”

And that was his fault? With all the crap he was trying to clean up and rectify?

Where were you to help?

" No really, this is the least important issue, in fact it isn’t even an issue except with morons who do not understand the Constitution. "

That's funny, keep hearing the Newt supporters whining about how Rick Santroum is a big Earmark spender, but when it comes to Newt, it's not a important issue,,, yeah, we got it now, do as I say and not as I do hypocrites..

Absolutely fantastic speech. The Republican Party needs to adopt everyone of his proposals and make it part of the platform and extract an oath by all candidates that they will enact each item (I know they won’t do that, but we conservatives should attempt to force it).

Newt Gingrich voted in favor of creating Jimmy Carter’s Department of Education.

Santorum was . . . well, Santorum. He said all the right things and was about as exciting as cooked cabbage. The man has no charisma whatsoever and he lacks any real vision. He’s a good solid conservative, but to say he’s uninspiring is minimizing it.

No true conservative will support earmarks. The point is that the legislative antic of earmarks has been going on up on the Hill for years by both parties. It needs to stop, but it didn't begin on Newt's watch. He may not have stopped it when he was there, but he didn't start it either. If you ask him today, I bet he will tell you he wants it to stop.
