The Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation’s senior vice president for public policy, Karen Handel, resigned from her post Tuesday morning following the breast cancer group’s decision to de-fund, then re-fund, Planned Parenthood.
Due to her outspoken pro-life views when she ran for Georgia governor in 2010, in the days and week following the decision to revoke funding from the abortion provider and the subsequent reversal of that decision, Handel became the name most closely associated with the policy changes that lead to Komen’s decision to pull funding.
Noting the important role the breast cancer organization has been playing for more than 30 years, Handel explained in her resignation letter to Komen’s founder and chief executive that she “carried out [her] responsibilities faithfully and in line with the board’s objectives,” and that the decision to pull Planned Parenthood funding was fully vetted by every appropriate level of the organization.
“I am deeply disappointed by the gross mischaracterizations of the strategy, its rationale, and my involvement in it. I openly acknowledge my role in the matter and continue to believe our decision was the best one for Komen’s future and the women we serve,” she wrote in her letter explaining that the decision to defund was not based on ideology or politics, but on the mission to better serve women.
According to Handel, the decision to “update [their] granting model” was made prior to her joining Komen.

A B C ya later honey!
Komen is back on the list of Must Boycott.
I hope this VP moves on to bigger and better things. She did a very good thing, followed by a very principled thing.
as Mark Steyn said, “Don’t Mess With Big Abortion”
The irony of this story is the unreported abortion/breast cancer link.
I’m glad there was one person at Komen willing to take a stand. Any cause that gets the sort of media love that Komen has received is going to be dominated by liberals and those liberals are going to be pro-abortion. The libs saw the withdrawing of Planned Parenthood funds as a threat to their power and exacted their fury, just as anybody should have expected. And Komen caved just as anybody should have expected.
The only surprise is that somebody high up had the courage to stand up and say “I quit” over this.
Just one more bit of human wreckage in Planned Parenthood’s wake. They don’t care as long as the money rolls in.
it is high time that the right and I mean all on the right wake up and start to fight these social issues.
I’m sick to death of the elitist telling us social issues do not matter and lets just look at fiscal matters.
If that is what they want then let them join the libertarian party and be liberal on social issues but don’t tell the country or the majority of the country we have to pay for their killings, we have to now accept homosexuals, marrying or getting kids and playing families
Have you read some of the comments after the article?
They grieve my Spirit Big Time.
The money from Komen is a drop in the bucket... it’s the power.
and the left will continue on with their war on social issues and will win because we have a gutless GOP, RNC who seem to think social issues are not worthy of a fight or don’t mention marriage or killing babies what tax payers have to pay for.
Either we start a new party with the likes of Allen West in it , or we overturn the GOP or we will lose and the killing of babies tax payers paying for it, homo marriages, 9 wives etc will become the norm and then be taught in schools to 5 year olds etc.
The biggest thing ANY group should have learned is to NEVER give Planned Parenthood money because if you do, you can NEVER stop giving them money or be crucified.
You know.. as “trendy and hip” as Americans like to be, and seeing all those stupid pink ribbons all over the place, someone needs to create one with featuring a bloody aborted fetus as part of the design. Maybe that’ll turn some heads.
good for her, I can’t see why she would go to komen in the first place, besides the affiliation with planned parenthood there is also the denial of the abortion and breast cancer link and most people who work for and support komen are democrats.
Maybe she thought she could make a difference, one step at a time. At least she tried, that's more than many others do.
