Newt Gingrich, a “John Paul II Catholic”
The Deacon's Bench ^ | 17 Dec 2011 | Deacon Greg Kandra

Mr. Gingrich represents a new kind of Catholic, one very different from the Kennedys, who were Democrats, political liberals and cradle Catholics shaped by the Irish immigrant church. To a Kennedy-era Catholic, divorce was a sin, labor unions were a virtue and anti-Catholic bigotry was a staple in many Protestant circles.

Mr. Gingrich is a culture wars Catholic for whom the church seems a logical home for conservative Republicans. Generations removed from the Kennedy years when Catholics predictably voted Democratic, this is a new era in which conservative Catholics and evangelical Protestants have joined forces in what they see as a defining struggle against abortion, same-sex marriage and secularism.

Critics and cynics have derided Mr. Gingrich’s latest religious transition as a conversion of convenience designed to give moral cover to Mr. Gingrich, who is on his third marriage — this one to Callista Bisek, a former Hill staff member 22 years his junior who had been his mistress for six years. But those who know him say the conversion was sincere, born of both an intellectual and a spiritual attraction to the church of his wife.

As I recall, Kennedy was pro-life, a lifetime member of the NRA and he cut taxes. Today, he’d be called an extremist.

Short of him being a Kirill I Catholic, or maybe a Bartholemew I Catholic, we Orthodox would prefer to hear him associated with Benedict XVI.

(The Orthodox and old time Latins here will know why I used Catholic the way I did.)

If Newt’s a “John Paul II Catholic”, then I’m a “Billy Graham protestant” (it’s a natural fit, since I’ve been a Catholic throughout Billy’s entire career)

On second though... call me a Pope Conon Catholic. If they elect me pontiff, I’m taking the name... Conon II!

Newt being a “John Paul II Catholic” means that he knows that Mitt Romney is not a Christian.

I wonder if he will be asked?

No venom. Just expressing the consciousness of Orthodox Christians everywhere that we constitute the One Holy Catholic and Apostolic Church, and the sense many of us have that Benedict XVI is the Pope of Rome closest in phronema to the Orthodox since the Latin schism in the 11th century.

Aye, and some Lutherans hold out hope that Benedict XVI might see in our heart....

... that which can animate the Church's "two lungs".

You must not be aware, that as a historian, Gingrich has authored a documentary on John Paul II.

I am on the road, going to Maine to help Newt’s crippled caucus effort.

I hope the people who have watched his films decide to play an active role in the caucuses. Back home in 3 days. over.

Interesting name, doesn’t appear in any name databases I can find except as a variant of Conan and this guy wasn’t Irish.

I hadn’t heard of him, either, or that name (which is Conone in Italian and Conón in Spanish), for that matter.

According to Wikipedia, Pope Conon met with and consecrated as a bishop an Irish missionary who went on to be canonized as Saint Kilian, so maybe the name Conan became popular in Ireland because of Pope Conon.
