A judge weighing one of three lawsuits challenging Wisconsin's new voter ID law said Thursday he needs more time to consider both sides' arguments before he will rule on the state's motion to dismiss the case.
After listening to arguments from attorneys for the League of Women Voters, which is seeking to overturn the law, and for Gov. Scott Walker and the state elections board, Dane County Circuit Judge Richard Niess said he couldn't yet rule on the motion but would at a March 9 hearing. He also said he may rule on the merits of the case then.
The state's attorneys argue that the League of Women Voters and co-plaintiff, Melanie G. Ramey, the league's Wisconsin chapter president, lack the legal standing to file the lawsuit because they can't show they would be harmed by the law, pointing out that Ramey hasn't proven she lacks an ID that would allow her to vote.
They also told Niess they don't think Walker should be a defendant in the suit because he's not directly involved in administering the law, which the Republican-led Legislature passed last year and which requires voters to present certain government-issued ID or a student ID that expires in less than two years before they can cast ballots.
League attorney Susan Crawford argued that the plaintiffs do have the legal standing to challenge the law, saying Ramey, or other registered voters, could be prevented from casting ballots if they are unable to obtain or produce proper ID at the polling station.
Ramey said she was pleased with how Niess handled the hearing.
"I understand his need to read through everything carefully," she said. "I hope we will prevail. I feel strongly about anything that would make it more difficult for people to vote."

He is from Dane County (Madistan) so what the he ll more is needed? You don’t get to be a judge there if you are a conservative.
He’s in Dane County which probably means that he’s a leftist.
I had to produce ID for DRANO the other day. I was stuned and beebered and the manager said he was told this become a federal law soon and he was staying ahead of the Fed’s lawsuits. I advised him nastily, it AIN”T law now and I’m paying for and taking my F’ing Drano or I’m taking his head with me.
Whatever is this world coming to???
On Wisconsin!
Of course no one wants voter ID when schools like UW can easily produce 35,000 democratic votes and then another 35,000 in home states via absentee ballots.
She wants "oops, I left my ID at home" to be the law of the land.
Stupid sobs. I had to provide a picture ID a few weeks ago to prove I was of drinking age. I’m 65 fn years old, and don’t look a day over 70.
LOL I had to provide one to get my senior discount at the movies when I was over 60. It happened to be our wedding anniversary and I accused my husband of telling the ticket seller to do that as a prank. It made my day!
