WASHINGTON, Jan 12 (Reuters) - The number of Americans applying for first-time jobless benefits rose last week, a report showed on Thursday, reversing a recent decline and suggesting the labor market remains brittle. Unemployment claims jumped to 399,000 in the first week of 2012, the highest in six weeks, from an upwardly revised 375,000 in the prior week. The four-week average of claims also marched higher to 381,750 from 374,000. The Labor Department report also showed 3.63 million continuing claims, up from 3.61 million. Including the millions of workers receiving benefits under emergency federal programs, some 7.3 million Americans were receiving unemployment benefits as of Dec. 24, the most recent date for which comprehensive figures are available. The U.S. unemployment rate has fallen sharply in recent months and was 8.5 percent December, but some economists worry the drop has been due in part to discouraged workers dropping out of the labor force.

just wait till the snow hits the north and all the construction workers file for their yearly unemployment too.

Will the biased MSM now say unexpectedly again?

Yea course they will as always, they;ve got to protect their asset/messiah more so than ever this year.

To hell with the GOP which is now the Dem party, the Dem party which is now the socialist party and the biased corrupt lying sack of crap lazy MSM.

We just don;t have a right wing party no more due to the inability to actually get the message out to the center right wing country.

Don’t discuss homosexuals or cross dressing , no sir don’t want to upset their beltway and north east elitist cocktail party pals, no sir just stay silent on the issues and let this country go to ruins, hell why should they care, they don’t serve no more hardly and they ‘ll be alright buying stocks with inside info.

can;t be the MSM/white house celebrated with great delight that sales were up and unemployment was down. ARF Personal debt up, sales just up but not what they first reported on the MSM, Kodak, Food lion, sears closing stores Where is bozo the clown now, the other week he did a press conference and told the country things were on the up and up. The GOP came out right away after bozo's speech and said, oh no they said nothing AGAIN

And Food Lion is closing all it’s Florida stores in addition to other moves; add another 4,900 to the count.

This may be just an adjustment to competition, i.e. Walmart Supercenters.

Another example is the closing of Marie Callendar's restaurants. In the meantime Starbucks booms. Winners and losers.

The U.S. unemployment rate has fallen sharply in recent months and was 8.5 percent December, but some economists worry the drop has been due in part to discouraged workers dropping out of the labor force.

What numbskulls. It's not a matter of "some economists" thinking it's all about discouraged workers.

The discouraged worker numbers are part of the record. You can see the number of them went up, you can add that to the unemployed, and you can see the unemployment rate skyrocket.

It's a matter of math, not a matter of "some economists".

Good point!

It’s still 4,900 people out of work...think the MSM will lead with it? If a GOP was POTUS, you bet they would!

Folks, noted that this number has already been “seasonally “ adjusted for normal holiday layoff. The actual numbers are much worse than the seasonally diddled numbers.

Well, you know what the pResident is going to do about it - throw another expensive, glitzy, star-studded White House party, of course.

That’ll fix everything.

UNEXPECTED!!! The Labor Department works for Obama, they are his puppets. The unemployment rate is NOT improving. The fall in December was due to seasonal jobs, now that is over, unemployment will bounce back up, that and many many people are simply dropping out of the workforce

Yeah, following a “unexpectedly” low number for a holiday week. Imagine that. As predictable as dead people voting in Chicago.

400,000 is the `psychological barrier` so VOILA, the number is 399,000.

Everyone heard that jobs were back so they all went looking for them again. Trumping up the economy hurts Obama in some ways as it encourages those no longer looking for work to start looking again—which moves them to the unemployeed #.
