Twenty years ago, Gingrichs appreciation of technology was more novel among Republicans, showing that there was a conservative libertarian interest in preserving the burgeoning Internet from efforts to regulate it. At the time, Gingrich talked up the transformative power of the Internet and a world where schools and hospitals would be wired.
In 1996, Gingrich then the speaker of the House resisted an attempt to fight porn on the Internet.
When the Senate began to push for the Communications Decency Act of 1996, Gingrich put up a roadblock that helped undermine the act, which was later struck down by the Supreme Court. The act, introduced by then-Sen. Jim Exon (D-Neb.), would have made indecent materials on the Internet illegal and made intermediaries such as Internet service providers responsible for policing content on the Web.
Some saw this effort as trying to apply rules of broadcast television to the Internet. Gingrich said then that the bill would not protect children but would impinge on the rights of adults. Gingrich pushed for an alternative that emphasized parental education.
"He should be credited with helping to promote a solution to come out against regulation that would have thwarted free speech and the vibrant Internet we know today, said Jerry Berman, founder of the Center for Democracy and Technology, one of the first cyber liberties groups.
Gingrich has an enthusiastic appreciation of technology, particularly as a way for the masses to circumvent traditional media and upend institutions like government.
He would probably be the most knowledgeable president on technology issues ever elected, said Bob Walker, former chairman of the House Science Committee. He can talk about technology in the 1800s, the 1900s and what it's doing today. He has a natural inclination to learn, and I think that shows.

Go Newt!
In before the first self righteous outraged post over Newt promoting porn.
I am all for adults accessing porn if they so choose, but they need to make it easy for parents to block it from their computers. Something needs to be done.
Of course, there would be issues with determining just what deserves to go into there, but at least making a voluntary .xxx global domain would be a good start.
I’ve always liked Newt. He was the common sense of the bunch. I do think he’d make a decent POTUS, and of the current crap of candidates we have to choose from, I’d strike my vote for him-and I wouldn’t really need to hold my nose.
I know, I know...he’s not a “true” Conservative. But, guess what? There are 310 million people here. Of which, about 110 million are, or can be, voters. We’ve had 3 administrations, in a row, stretching the boundaries of our Constitution. And now we have 0bama, who disregards it in it’s entirety. People are mad as hell, too much drastic change, and way too fast. Now, we need someone who can slow things down, make sense of it all, and get the majority of us on the same page somewhere in the middle. Someone who can gain the population’s trust in Government back. We’ve lost so much ground, now we have to rebuild. It takes baby steps to do that.
I think Newt is up to that challenge, and none of the others are. But, of course, the fix is, and has been, in for Romney, and he’ll get the nod.
God have mercy on U.S.
What good is it if it is voluntary. The money making sites have been .com for decades and they arent going to change voluntarily. There would have to be clear standards. Any nudity other than medical related perhaps?
Of course, a 12-year-old will know how to reconfigure the browser around that...the Google search that found that also found websites with instructions on how to to break out.
You can lock down your browser so that it can only goes to particular sites and if you try to go to a site that isn’t whitelisted, then you have to enter a password. That’s a simple solution that doesn’t involve the creation of a cabinet level federal agency.
Yes indeed, GO NEWT!
It would certainly make it easier for children to find it too. Just type in anything and add .xxx, and sit back. It'll come to you.

I believe this was after he recommended that the poor kids be given laptops.
***There are 310 million people here.***
Many of whom are not puritans, Christians or Jews. In a strange twist - perhaps Newt’s personal flaws will be a wash-out.
Evangelicals who will not vote for him because of his marital weaknesses vs. non-churchgoers who have also sinned and identify with him.
His platform, abilities, knowledge and experience are vital to our survival - IMHO.
Good points. We’re not electing a pope. I’m inclined toward someone who will just leave me alone. There are too many from either side that want government to enforce their version of ‘my best life’.
So true. Those of us who believe in and attempt to live our lives according to Judeo-Christian values need to step back from self-righteousness and exemplify our faith.
Parental Controls are built-in in OS X.
Hopefully, reason will prevail. No need to cut off our nose to spite our face. Not at a time like this. This is the time to show our love, devotion and loyalty to our Nation, the very same Nation that allows us Religious freedom, and liberties that are still the envy of the planet.
I’m serious. For the only time in my nearly 60 years, I will vote for someone I despise over allowing that son of a b1tch to be reelected. We are in that bad of shape right now. An 0bama 2nd term will spell the end of our Republic.
I pledge to vote (R). How ‘bout you? How ‘bout everyone else?
Perfectly said, spot on.
Oh, wow. Macs came with that in ‘95? Cool.
