Jet fuel flash points vary greatly. Both Jet A and Jet A-1 have flash points between 100-151 °F, close to that of off-the-shelf kerosene 100162 °F. Yet both Jet B and JP-4 have flash points between -9 and 30 °F. Diesel fuel flash points vary between 126 and 205 °F. Biodiesel flash point is 266 °F, Yes the U.S. Navy should use Biodiesel, in the Boilers of the ships not in a multi-million dollar Jets with lives at stake. Oh and not at $ 26.00 per gallon, Hell NO! why not use perfume; make the whole world smell better.
“boilers” ?????
Almost all Naval surface ships have either Gas Turbine engines OR diesel engines. Boilers are, for the most part, a thing of the past.
“Steam plants” are now essentially synonymous with nuclear power ships.
BUT - concept is valid. These fuels could be used on diesel plants or ships with gas turbines - because a fuel-related problem on an aircraft is far more significant than for a surface ship. OR - let the bio-fuel be used exclusively with auxiliarys/small craft/support vessels in and around Naval Bases and shipyards. Their consumption is significant enough to provide a good testing....but should only be embarked upon if pricing isn’t ridiculous. Maybe 2 times is a place to start ...but 3 x or more - NO WAY!!
