US military a prime 'target' for home-grown terrorists
Breitbart ^ | December 7, 2011 | N/A

The US military is under threat in its own country as homegrown Islamic extremists, including "radicalized troops," are treating military installations here as prime targets, US officials warned Congress Wednesday.

The only deadly terror strikes on US soil since those of September 11, 2001 have been against the military, with three separate attacks that left 17 people dead, most of them soldiers, according to a report released Wednesday at the first joint House-Senate hearing on homegrown terrorism.

US military installations since 9/11 have been the target of at least 33 "threats, plots and strikes," more than half of the 54 homegrown jihadist plots and attacks that have occurred or been uncovered over the past decade, the report said.

"A particularly insidious aspect of the homegrown terror threat remains radicalized troops who target their fellow brothers and sisters in arms, without regard to their faith," it said.

Republican Representative Peter King, who as head of the House Homeland Security Committee has chaired a series of hearings this year on Islamist extremism threat, lamented the "growing security threat from radicalization both internally within the military, as well as externally toward military personnel and their families residing in the United States."

The threat by radicalized members of the US armed forces "is persistent and enduring," he said in an opening statement to the hearing.

Paul Stockton, the assistant secretary of defense for homeland defense, pointed to the recent "increased numbers of American citizens or residents inspired by Al-Qaeda's ideology -- and the Department of Defense has become their target of choice."

"The primary threat to (homeland) security comes from Al-Qaeda and its affiliates," he added.

Independent Senator Joseph Lieberman said "the enemy is not a vague catchall of violent extremism, but a specific violent Islamist extremism, an exploitation and corruption,

Contrary to popular opinion, military members going to and from military bases are sitting ducks. The reason is simple. There is no base commander I know who allows military members to carry concealed when entering a military installation. It is a felony to bring a firearm onto a military installation without authorization. So, that’s why the body count was so high at Ft. Hood. That situation was all the more tragic as many of the service personnel wounded/killed were combat veterans who probably would have survived if concealed carry had been permitted. This is something that Congress can fix. I believe that military members should be allowed to carry or have a weapon in their vehicle if entering military bases. I wish someone is Congress would sponsor legislation to that effect.

During my time in Iraq, we profiled “military-aged males’ (MAM’s) as potential insurgents. Any male 17-45 was a potential terrorist.

This is what’s needed now. Keep MAM’s away from military installations and key infrastructure. Profile MAM’s for suspicious activities. Don’t trust them. Don’t hire them. Don’t believe them.

Don’t worry.

When it happens (again, thanks Nadal Hassan), they’ll just blame TEA partiers, semi-automatic firearms and gun shows.

I had my whole arsenal on base (moved them there in a ditty move) and required no permission at the gate or authorization from anyone. I took my guns on and off the base to go shooting at the army post down the road, and many times to go hunting, and never had any problems...even when there was a lock down and vehicles were inspected at the gate. Everyone did that with their personal weapons. If there’s some rule against it, I never heard about it.

There is.

If you reside on base in housing, you can keep your firearms there.

If you reside in the dormitories, you must store your POF in the armory.

If you reside off base, and bring a POF onto the base, you must be headed to the gun range, headed to the armory, or headed out to hunting areas.

ie. if you carry a gun in your car at all times, you are breaking the rules.

During the past 50 years, over 98% of all terrorist attacks have been perpetrated by Muslim males aged 15 - 48.

So why is a crippled white woman, age 84, being strip searched by TSA?

Is this at Ft. Hood? Can you carry concealed on base?
I really doubt that. Also, you may have guns in base housing at some bases, but most require that they be registered with the Provost Marshall. Coming on and off base, I doubt you can have a loaded weapon in your car in reach or on your person. I think the local base now allows residents to have weapons in their car (ammo physically separated from firearms or in the trunk), when the member lives on base and is going to and from hunting or the range. There is no permission for people who live off base to have weapons in their car when coming on base to go to work or to the exchange. I don’t know the exact rules of your home base, but I am reasonably sure that don’t include loaded weapons within reach in your car or concealed on your person. If you find out something different with regards to Ft. Hood, I would be interested to know.
