Data derived from the FBI’s National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) shows that November 25, 2011, Black Friday, had the most background checks for firearm purchases in a single day (129,166) with a 32 percent increase over the previous NICS high (November 28, 2008). Federal law requires FBI background checks on all individuals purchasing firearms from federally licensed retailers.

These statistics represent the number of firearm background checks initiated through NICS. They do not represent the number of firearms sold. Based on varying state laws and purchase scenarios, a one-to-one correlation cannot be made between a firearm background check and a firearm sale.

“More citizens lawfully exercising their Second Amendment right to carry a firearm, coupled with a growing awareness since the Supreme Court’s decisions in Heller and McDonald that the Second Amendment protects an individual fundamental right to keep and bear arms, helps to explain the continuing rise in sales of firearms and firearm-related products throughout the Untied States,” said National Shooting Sports Foundation Senior Vice President and General Counsel Lawrence G. Keane. “Clearly, Black Friday was a big day for both the firearms industry and our nation’s law-abiding gun owners.”

NICS Firearm Background Checks — Friday, November 25, 2011

Total NICS Checks—129,166 (highest day ever) 32.01 percent over Friday, November 28, 2008

Federal Checks—81,609 (highest day ever) 26.69 percent over Friday, November 28, 2008

POC State Checks—47,557 (4th highest day)

Other Records

NICS Contracted Call Centers—69,497 (highest day ever) 16.30 percent over Friday, November 28, 2008

NICS E-Check—11,953 (highest day ever) 119.76 percent over Friday, February 11, 2011

Interesting numbers. President Obama is the greatest civilian gun salesman of all time. For military weapons, I think the prize would go to Hitler, Stalin, or Mao.

That or they understand Obummer is out to destroy the country, there's widespread unemployment, the economy in the US and worldwide is tanking and stuff is hitting the fan.

Just about all of my friends that were never really interested in firearms in the past now own some kind of gun. And not for hunting.

More likely the Occupy movement violence and calls for violence contributing to any sales increase.

And in other gun news: TSA detains 17 year old girl at Norfolk airport, over the design of her purse. It had a replica gun on it. TSA This is a federal offense because it’s in the shape of a gun. Girl, It’s not real. http://wwwnews4jax.com

I'm pretty sure no one was pepper-spraying anybody to get the to head of that line.

Black Friday was Black Rifle Friday for me. I bought parts for my new AR build. But I also bought firearm accessories as presents for my family, too.

I have been hearing from friends (women!) who had NO interest in guns before, asking me what kind of pistol they should buy for self-defense. Of course, I always say: GO GET SOME TRAINING. Take a class, and have the instructor bring a lot of different pistols and revolvers. Shoot them. See what fits good in your hand. See what you like to shoot.

You know, I think the American woman's "mommy sense" is beginning to tingle. They know civilization is in jepardy, and they are going into "momma grizzly" mode to protect the home and the cubs. God bless 'em.

Since your already considering the H&R, add the Rossi Matched pair. Same type of action but with interchangeable shotgun - centerfire barrels in nice soft carry case for about the same price. 12ga and .223 is a nice combo. Others are available. Bought 3 sets of .308- 12ga seven years ago for Bug-out bags. Perfect for instruction of non-shooters in survival situations. Scope rail attaches to barrel so with mounted scope there’s no change in zero. Ugly but light compact and they shoot. But certainly not a home defense weapon of choice.

When women tell me that they doubt that they could shoot someone in self defense, I ask them if they could shoot someone who was going to murder or rape their child. The answer is always an emphatic Yes!

After that, I ask them if they could shoot someone who was going to deprive their children of a mother.
