The Hormel “compleats” are a very cheap alternatives to MRE’s.
Long shelf life and cheap.
I keep them for deep back up.

The taters and beef aint bad.

Please do not get me wrong.
If a person has the space and money to stock two years of supplies, I am all for it, but it looks much nicer on paper then in reality.

You first have to define the disaster, which, of course, you can not do.
There are just too many variables, such as type of disaster, location, weather, politics (war or peace).
Another huge factor is your skills and abilities.
The majority in America have never hunted anything more then
a mouse in their kitchen.

It is great to have a two year supply of survival supplies, but not much good if they are blown up, taken from you, or destroyed in any number of ways...fire, flood, theft, earthquake, war, etc.
The odds of your being able to use them in a worse case scenario becomes quite slim.

Some situations can require you to hunker down, but it is just as likely that you will have to always be on the move.
We are discussing a subject that has too many variables.

We are discussing a subject that has too many variables.

You couldn't be more wrong.

One does not prepare for everything. One prepares for the most likely, and gradually progresses to less likely as resources allow.

Losing a job is more likely than hurricane damage, but if you prepare for the hurricane correctly, the loss of a job is already covered.

I'm not about to go tit-for-tat with you over hypotheticals that are designed to do nothing but make your position seem reasonable, but trust me on this, you're talking out of your hat.

Yes..I am thinking that neighborhoods should ban together to bring in a expert who knows how to organize and teach survival..Most Americans do not know the first thing about how to survive on their own..That is why they will look to a dictator when things fall apart.

That was much of my point, but I am taking a beating for it.
Comparing a rough and hardened Serb to an every day
9-5 American is comparing apples to oranges.
I was in Belgrade around Jan 2005. They are rugged people
and are use to adversity.
There is not one American out of a thousand that could deal with the adversities they have experienced.

Anyway, we are dealing in many hypotheticals.
There is no one size fits all ways to deal with disaster, war, invasion, or acts of God.

I can take you to many places especially in the south LA, TN, AL Ga and there are plenty of tough old boys that cat fish hunt, fix stuff and fight. I even meet a few real cowboys out here in my new home who still live the life and can rope ride, hunt and kick ass. Yes there a plenty of yuppies that no mater what they do they will die, but there still are plenty of hard working good old boys around that can git her done.

No need.
I lived my first 55 years in Tennessee and owned two farms.
I was not big and tough enough to fight, but I did ride horses, and built one my own houses in 1972.
I moved to central Europe in 2004, but now retired and living on a beach in the Philippines with my girlfriend and our 9 month old baby boy ;)

“I am thinking that neighborhoods should ban together...”

Excellent idea (on paper), but this would only work in a small town rural setting, IMHO. Urban neighborhoods are often filled with opportunists that would take advantage of those with food & ‘useful things’. The cities will implode within 72 hours as already formed gangs will target those who prepared.

The best advice I can give is to get the hell out of the city and establish yourself in a small community before it’s too late.

You are 100% correct about folks welcoming a “dictator”. This has been the plan all along. Create enough confusion and fear and the weakened masses will cry out for someone to come in and restore control, no matter how oppressive i.e. Martial Law.

Welcome to the New World Order.

A person that I bought a house from made money as a second business getting people up to speed about hunting deer.

Choosing the site, the hunting, field dressing, butchering and packaging the meat.

I'm not buying MREs and such. I do however, have a very well stocked pantry, with dried beans, rice, flour, sugar, canned goods and dried dishes. I also have a freezer well stocked. I could easily go 90 days eating normally, much longer if I rationed. They way things are, it's absolutely reasonable to prepare fo an economic collapse, even a social one. Got guns and ammo too!

That is, by far, the best advice on this thread, but even that is becoming a problem. I did it in 1972, while I was still a single young buck of 32.

I bought a farm and moved to a small town of 500, 50 miles east of Memphis.
I did not know farming and did not have the equipment, but I rented out the cropland.
I joined the volunteer fire department of the small town two miles away, and often drove the truck.
I had more friends in six months then I ever had in the city.
I first had a mobile home, but soon built my own house with help from other guys in town.

Since I started a two-way radio and telephone business, and soon I was serving farmers, businesses, and local governments in 8 counties of two states.

Sadly, it would not be so easy or fun now.
The cotton gin is gone, the small local groceries are gone,
and the old 90+ year old merchant on the main street has long passed, and middle-east Muzies now own highway quick-stops most everywhere in the state, pushing out local guys, and cell-phones have replaced radio systems.

America is changing fast, and as one of my brothers says,
It is all “Gone With the Wind”.

It would be much more intelligent to learn about how to freeze dry your own food, get a vacuum sealer and how to basically create your own MRE.

Now we have a run on anything that resembles long term food storage, higher prices and low inventory.

What will happen if they are not used nor needed? I expect that after the elections and we get things straightened out and DC cleaned up that there will then be a glut of MRE types of sales on Ebay, Craigslist etc.

The absolute best thing one can do...first.

Get out of large urban areas. If society begins to erode due to whatever, competing for necessities with thousands of others is the largest hurdle.

We moved out of the city. We have the ability to hunt, fish, trap. Have our own well, chickens/eggs. Planting fruit trees, have a garden.

It's tough sometimes, but learning to provide for yourself and not depend so much on the supermarket or local utility provider could pay off.

Besides, we have a nice home with a little acreage out in the country and away from the hustle bustle of the city.

Yup, you and 10,000 other people with the same idea. It will be amateur time in the bush, with bullets flying everywhere and guys arguing over the best fishing hole.

Yes it's better to stay put then wander somewhere. If you did that, than you could be in trouble. What would you do than? Staying put is safer then trying to evacuate, than you can make a plan.

then than then than then than then than
