LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The owner of a South Robertson smoke shop shot and killed a suspect and injured another during an armed robbery.
The incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. Sunday on the 1400 block of South La Cienega Boulevard near Alcott Street at Smoke 'N' Gifts.
Authorities said two men tried to rob the store, armed with a gun. The store owner had his own gun and fired at the intruders. The owner told police that he feared for his life.
Daniel Neal lives five houses down from the shop and says he heard the shots ring out.
"I thought it was fireworks, but they rang out quite a bit," Neal said. "I go there myself sometimes, so I know the guys. So, I came down this morning to see if they're OK, but seems like they're busy fixing their window. Looks like their car has a flat tire too, so I think maybe he shot his car."
According to police, both men were taken to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where one of them died. The other man was listed in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the head.
It remained unclear whether the robbers fired any shots in the incident.
The owner was taken away by police after the shooting and questioned. He was later released and has not been arrested. He didn't appear to suffer any injuries.
Employees of nearby businesses came into work Monday morning and were shocked at the news.

I love stories with a happy ending!
I’d to see the mug shot of the dude who lived.
Just sayin’
He was using a S&W 50 ring gauge.
I live three blocks from that store..my sister has been there before, she said the owner is a real bad ass, wouldnt want to mess with him. Bravo for killing the scumbag!!
Given the streets and my recollection of L.A., that would be in “the communi-tee”...
I only hope and pray that the D.A. and the Police Chief are not Democrats . . . if you know what I mean.
Yeah, that would be, "Armed communi-tee"
Armed men on a rooftop overlook Western Avenue during the 1992 Los Angeles riots.
LOL. I was at my girlfriends place that night - about three blocks away! Didn’t hear the shots, but plenty of helicopters that night.
That area is pretty quiet at night, didn’t even think any stores were open at 9pm on a Sunday night..good thing the guy was armed..bet the robbers didnt think the owner would be packing heat. I always hear helicopters around here(Since Cedar Sinai Hospital is so close-by) Im used to hearing them all the time
I am 6'2” and 200 lbs and I don't go running at the local track too long after sundown.
And when I get up in the morning I see human detritus shaking off the chill of the morning.
But my girlfriend gets mad when I say it isn't a nice neighborhood!
Sorry! Armed robbery and homeless people = not such a nice neighborhood.
I believe this was Wilshire District, not South Central.
Steve
Yes, less Korean more Kosher. ;)
Textbook. Absolutely textbook perfect.
No one said anything about south central.
This armed stand off occurred on Western Ave about a half mile south of Wilshire, on Western Ave.
During this time, the rooftops in LA were jammed with armed individuals protecting their businesses.
Actually you’d be surprised the amount of crime you see here in Beverly Hills..A few weeks ago a neighbor of ours(She always sits on the corner of La Cienega and Gregory Way talking on her cell phone. Well at around 1pm my sister had brought the dogs over and the lady came to us crying, said she was sitting on the corner talking on her cell phone when a man came up to her and said “Is everything ok” she said she was fine, then the man said “Look what I have” and she looked up and saw he had a gun tucked in his pants, said he would kill her if she screamed, demanded everything she had on her, all she had was her cell phone so she gave it to him. All of this happening in broad daylight. Even in supposed good areas you have criminals
Smoked him!
More gun laws needed to stop these senseless deaths by gun carrying store owners./S
