Taking a page from Ronald Reagan, Texas Gov. Rick Perry on Saturday sought to use humor to rebound from his much-noted debate flub earlier in the week. That flub, a 53-second brain freeze that was replayed endlessly on news shows, had him forgetting the name of the Department of Energy, the third federal agency he pledges to eliminate.
So Perry was quick to cut off CBS Scott Pelley, one of the debate moderators in South Carolina, when he began a question, saying, Governor Perry, you advocate the elimination of the Department of Energy. If you eliminate the Department of Energy...
I'm glad you remembered it, interjected Perry with a big smile as the audience broke into applause and laughter. Pelley responded, I've had some time to think about it, sir. And Perry shot back again to even more laughter, Me, too.
Far from being uptight after his earlier stumble, Perry was loose even before the debate. Backstage before the TV lights came on, Perry said to fellow candidate Rick Santorum, So tonight if I need a lifeline, I'm just gonna look to you, OK?
Santorum laughed and offered to fill in the blanks for the Texan. The two men then high-fived each other. At that point, they laughed about Rep. Ron Paul telling Perry after the Michigan debate that everybody has that happen, most people just don't do it in front of four million people. In South Carolina, Paul laughed and told Santorum, I was trying to make him feel better.
Perrys use of humor was reminiscent of Reagans rebound in 1984 after the then-president's performance in that year's first presidential debate with Democratic nominee Walter F. Mondale raised questions about whether age had dulled Reagan's mental quickness. At the second debate, Reagan was ready when he question came up. I will not make age an issue in this campaign," he said. "I'm not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience. The lasting image from that debate is Mondale laughing heartily at the joke at his expense. And the question of Reagans age was put to rest for the campaign.
Perry can't even read the notes his handlers prepared for him.....couldn't read off a key position after 53 seconds of trying. Perry has been reduced to being a caricature. Embarrassed Texans must be planning ways to throw the bum out of office, as we type.

JUST WONDERING Why didnt Perry expound on his foreign policy triumph WRT Islam when he had the chance at a perfect venue----last night's foreign policy debate? (/snix)

GOVERNOR'S OFFICE ANNOUNCEMENT Gov Perry addresses the Aga Khan: It is a great honor to be in the presence of the Imam of 16 million Muslims around the world, a global humanitarian leader, a man of peace with a pluralistic vision for people around the world, His Highness, the Aga Khan, the 49th Hereditary Imam of the Shia Imami Ismaili Muslims. Your Highness, on behalf of 23 million Texans, and over 600,000 thousand Muslims living in Texas, I extend our heartfelt appreciation for your 50 years of great international leadership.
We are delighted to welcome you to the Lone Star State and participate in the celebration of your Golden Jubilee. I am also grateful to the many federal, state and local leaders in attendance tonight. By their presence, these special guests convey the profound respect that exists in the Western World for His Highness work and leadership.
In April 2004, the Aga Khan Foundation (AKF) and Univ of Texas-Austin finalized a grant proposal that created the partnership that became known as the Muslim Histories and Cultures Program (MHC).
MHC recruited and directly trained 80 teachers affecting approximately 15,150 students of World History and World Geography in ten key Texas districts in 2005 and 2006.
The purpose is two-fold 1) to fulfill Governor Rick Perrys desire to better educate Texas teachers on Muslim topics and 2) to train teachers to use a cultural lens approach to understanding other cultures.
Governor Perry was instrumental in getting this program off the ground. ####

I know Bob Perry personally and he is a fine conservative. And a great American patriot. He came from nothing and built a wildly successful company. He was THE person that funded the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth. Without Bob Perry there was a darn good chance John Kerry would have been elected president.
I agree that Cain loses credibility when he tries to answer every domestic question with 999 and every foreign policy question with “I'll consult the generals/experts.”
I am not happy with any of the current GOP candidates, but I will vote for anyone except Huntsman.
Know who was impressive last night? Michele Bachman. She has no chance, but she was impressive last night.
Have not seen anything showing that today.
I think Sarah is happy as a lark to not be beaten on day after day by the MSM.
Herman Cain had a horrible debate last night and for good reason. His inexperience was on display and his rhetoric was unable to cover his foreign policy ignorance.
Perry did great..One could almost think that Pelley teed up that softball for Rick..it was a gift....a set-up, and Perry hit it out of the park..could Pelley have wanted to give Perry a chance?
Perry was fantastic. I loved his answers! He reminds me so much of Reagan.
I agree that was good too. Thanks for bringing that up.
Nope. Most of us are just biding our time. We know that things are starting to change now for Perry - he's going to move up in the polls, which means numbers will be going down for some of the others. We're happy with the way Gov. Perry has handled himself through this. America is just now going to get to know him. This "Fangirl" is very happy right now.
There are many of us that support Perry. More then you wish to realize. And CW is doing a great thing to post things about the best candidate and the most conservative candidate, Rick Perry.
You sure are afraid of his being elected since you are bossing CW around telling her what you said. "don't you have a better way to spend your time?"
You mean the person YOU are for cannot win if there is any GOOD news about other candidate??!! LMAO good luck with that.
LOL that was the best comment ever. hahaha I love it. I agree so much, I am not voting for advisors.
>> “There are many of us that support Perry. More then you wish to realize” <<
.
That would explain why he’s striving to reach 1% in the polls, huh?
It wasn’t a page from Reagan, it was from Bevis and Butthead.
Most of the other Fangirls have read the writing on the wall.
*******************************
I support Gov. Perry as the most qualified based on his record in Texas and his conservative values.
The personal attacks on Perry and his supporters on FR have been vicious. I am a long time Freeper (registered on 7/2/98) who participated in the ‘March for Justice’ and who stood with with the DC Chapter at the White House to protest Clinton’s shameful behavior & perjury.
I am proud to display my support for Rick Perry in my tag line.
>> It is a great honor to be in the presence of the Imam of 16 million Muslims around the world, a global humanitarian leader, a man of peace with a pluralistic vision for people around the world...” <<
.
And then they try to say that Ricardo Kahn is a christian.
Christians do not accept pluralism.
Thanks Cincinatus’ Wife.
"I refuse to use my youth and inexperience compared to Herman Cain against him!"
"We've outlawed Parental Consent. Bombing Starts in Five Minutes!"
Cheers!
Cheers!
I’ve been getting worn-out on Perry for a few years now. He is not an imaginative or out-in-front type at all.
I have been embarrassed for him more than anything else. He went into this campaign extremely unprepared and not well served by his organization. I don’t know where it goes from here. His campaign now is just a wait and see operation with hopes of continued fund raising to keep it alive.
He is not going to say anything or have any great clearing proposal that brings him back up.
You're right, most affairs by Presidents have been with fellow citizens.
Cheers, troll.
