Video: Gingrich schools Pelley on “rule of law” on terrorists
Hot Air ^ | November 12, 2011 | Ed Morrissey

I missed tonight’s CBS debate, mainly because I spent a great evening with some of my blogging friends here at FreedomWorks’ BlogCon2011. When I returned, though, I got a few messages about one particular moment in the debate, where CBS moderator attempted to lecture Newt Gingrich on the “rule of law” regarding American citizens who join the enemy to wage war against the US. Big mistake.

The two worst aspects of this exchange? The smug look on Pelley’s face when he challenged Gingrich on this point, and the “no” you can hear him utter just as Gingrich started his smackdown of Pelley. Regardless of the context of this exchange, this is a perfect encapsulation of why these media debates are utterly worthless, and why the Republican Party needs to force a format change. Pelley isn’t running for President, and we don’t need to have Pelley debating the presidential candidates. We need them to debate each other. It’s only made more ridiculous when a moderator-turned-participant ends up as far out of his depth as Pelley was on this question.

As I mentioned, I didn’t watch the debate, but from my Twitter feed and a few e-mails, it seems that many thought that Gingrich and Romney were strong as usual, Rick Perry did surprisingly well, and Herman Cain spent too much time deflecting with promises to have a team of experts look at the issues once he’s elected President. I don’t know how Rick Santorum did in the debate, but his team sent out their spin e-mail with the subject line, “Draft Template,” which leads me to conclude that he at least flunked the post-debate. Either that or he’s looking to back a new candidate named John R. Template for the Republican nomination.

We already have one open thread for the debate, but feel free to add your opinions on the debate in this thread, too.

The smug look on Pelley’s face when he challenged Gingrich on this point..

"Smug". That is exactly the word I was going to use. I haven't watched network news in over a decade so I will assume this guy Pelly is an anchor or reporter for CBS? Wow. CBS hasn't changed a bit since Dan Rather got caught using a forged document to try to fix the election for Kerry back in 2004. That station is owned and operated by the DNC.

I couldn’t believe it. Scott Pelley is SUPPOSED to be the “unbiased” moderator, and he’s debating with one of the debaters!

Yeah he’s the anchor of the CBS Evening News and is also on 60 Minutes.

It’s a perpetual look on Pelley’s he seemingly was born with.
The first time I saw him on tv I was instantly repelled by it.

I can’t stand looking at him.

Two brutal knockouts tonight back to back. Gingrich knocked out Pelley and Des Santos toppled Velazquez.

He is absolutely right; however, would Gingrich really destroy Obama in a debate or would he do as he was told as did McCain? That’s the problem I have with Gingrich. He is a member of the elite. It’s hard to trust someone no matter well he sounds that has sold you out already.

This was a ridiculous debate. Ron Paul got 89 seconds. Bachmann was also pissed off.

Why anyone would mention how Perry did, unless they’re Democrats wanting Republicans to pick an incompetent candidate, is just beyond me.

Perry did not completely forget what the core of his economic plan was. Victory.

Next debate, Perry could have a bloody nose the entire time, just blood running down his face. He’s literally covered in blood. Then, the debate after that, he is able to stop the blood flow mid debate. And the debate after that, no blood at all. Perrys debate skills improving.

The next debate “no pants”. Debate after that, “pants” New, Pants wearing Perry wows crowd. Also, blood free!!!

I wasn't aware that there was a debate recently.
But many apparently did. I'm just flabbergasted that, if it was televised, a clip of that exchange hasn't been prepared for future use.

I'd love to see it.

Gingrich is a good debater. He is a smart guy as well.

He’s not a tea party conservative.

I’d vote for him in November. I prefer him to Romney (fmr Gov MA), Roemer (I think) (fmr Gov LA), Huntsman (fmr Gov UT), Johnson (I think) (fmr Gov NM).

What was wrong with Buddy Roemer again? What specifically sucks about him?

He was a US Representative, he was a Governor, he ran a bank.

We know that Newt sucks, some are starting to embrace him anyway, because the thinking is that everyone else sucks more.

Buddy Roemer has a better resume than Bachmann or Cain, seriously. Not to say he’s a better candidate, but he has a good resume.

“Harvard undergrad, Harvard MBA. Traditional Presidential Education.”

This may be what’s wrong running for POTUS.

Des Santos toppled Velazquez.
That was not very thoughtful. I was just about to watch it.

Newt is not my first choice (not my last either by a long shot) but this is another example of why I know Newt would mop the floor with Bamby in a debate!

Scott Rabbit-Pellets, or whatever his name is, is a disgrace and should never be allowed to moderate another debate ever!

Right, but still. Yes, there is a populist appeal to, let’s say Palin’s college resume, which is actually good, but traditionally, there is a block of people who do look for Ivy League. And recently, there has been a lot of Yale and Harvard. I guess Reagan was the last President without a Yale or Harvard.
