Election day 2011 LIVE THREAD
Free Republic | 11-8-11 | Me, myself, and I

Posted on 11/08/2011 3:26:40 PM PST by RKBA Democrat

It's election day in NJ, MS, LA, the Northern Marianas Islands and....

VIRGINIA!!!!!

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Senate is currently controlled by the democrats by two seats. It'll be an interesting night.

Correct. I’m hoping Issue 3 passes at least.

“This is sad”

Yes and no. Looks like the dems are going to lose the state senate in any case. Please check my numbers, but it looks to me like the gop is leading the dems in 22 races.

me too - i thought sb5 was what kasich passed that neutered the leech unions

prop 2 was an attempt to repeal it and give the leeches back their gravy train

so we'd want a no vote to repeal it

Fraud? Union thuggery? Both?

Several factors at play here. First off, the insidious reach of the teacher's unions - everyone has someone in the family or their neighbhood milking the education establishment. Secondly, the GOP overreached in passing SB5; too many parts went into one bull which was puched through the General Assembly. Had the measures in the bill been passed individually, it would have been much more difficult to repeal.

The main reason, however, was that the unions made this Ground Zero for organizing and apending money, and one part of SB5 would have done away with compulsory union membership. The unions poured tens of millions of dollars into repealing SB5, easily outspending the pro-Issue 2 group by four or five to one.

I'd bet that some of the major components of SB5 will be passed individually after the turn of the year, so the long range impact is hard to see tonight. It's not good, though.

“Yep it is a cake walk for the left tonight! Even Norfolk so far is going left........how stupid is that?”

Norfolk has always been left. And in the 6th to be honest the dems had a far better ground game. They fought to win, and it looks like they won that seat.

Actually there was a leaked memo from a progressive group in Ohio, at Third Base Politics (conservative Ohio blog) that said the polls were based on flawed info, that they the Vote No Issue 2 crowd were not doing well. So keep you toes, fingers, kittens, dogs and eyes crossed!

That is correct - a "yes" vote meant that Senate Bill 5 would remain law, a "no" vote meant that it would be repealed. The good guys (us) wanted SB5 to remain law, but the unions won this round.

Thanks for the very thorough response, Tony. A few posts back, there was mention of Governor Kasich putting his foot in his mouth and that also being a factor. What was that about?

I apologize for not following the lead up to this election as closely as I should considering my past activism against big labor and union tyranny. I really should know more since John Kasich is from my hometown (McKees Rocks, PA).

Bad news is that Issue 2 will fail, but the good news is that Issue 3, the Healthcare Freedom issue, should pass - the early tallies look good where they need to look good.

Yup - Northam kept his seat. This district is such a mess. What exactly does the Eastern Shore really have in common with Virginia Beach, let alone Norfolk, other than water?

No, that's correct, unfortunately - we wanted "for" votes on Issue 2, not "against". Issue 2 is losing, badly.
