It's election day in NJ, MS, LA, the Northern Marianas Islands and....

VIRGINIA!!!!!

In the Commonwealth of Virginia, the Senate is currently controlled by the democrats by two seats. It'll be an interesting night.

“The VA GOP has one major problem ... age! I quit the county committee some years ago because as I looked around, the ‘young guys’ when I first joined all had gray hair .. no new young blood.”

The dems have much the same problem. Truth be told, the committees are largely irrelevant these days. The real work is done by candidates and the dem associated groups like the unions who make the phone calls and do the legwork. The gop really doesn’t have the same sort of shadow support network. And they lose as a result. No GOTV = no wins.

At a certain point having the bigger checkbook just doesn’t get you the votes. You’ve got to communicate with people and it seems the gop doesn’t really want to do that or is unable to do that.

My precinct used to be slightly Republican, but that has changed with an influx of immigrants and government workers. Was up early to distribute literature, going to sleep. Will get results in the morning.

The Dem handing out the sample ballots at my voting place today appeared to be a teacher. Fairfax Schools are always closed on election day. Elementary teachers have parent conferences, others finish grading at the end of the first grading period. I suppose they have an hour or two to spare to volunteer at the polls.

The R handing out the sample ballots was clearly a vet.

Looks like the GOP is on track to hold the Mississippi Senate—presently only three of the races are close, two of which are breaking for the GOP—if things hold, they should emerge on top 29 to 23—worst case scenario is 27 to 25, which would be holding steady.

At present, they are also on track to pick up the house for the first time since reconstruction—elected or leading in 63, which is one more than necessary. Results are still early for the house. (3 seats have no results in at all).

So it looks like Reeves by 86 votes with all precincts counted. Like there won’t be a recount ... but for tonight let him celebrate, taking out a long termer.

Nominating Romney also won't help matters.

I think those predicting a one term presidency for Obama are being overly optimistic, personally.

you may have some news when you wake up. VA-Senate 17 is Red right now, somehow someway, the R is up by 75 votes with 100% of the ballots in. Now the UVA crowd could find a box of ballots somewhere, but it is very frowned on, this late at night.

The Virginia Senate looks to be tied 20 to 20 with the Republicans holding the tie-breaker and the House and Governorship.

Mississippi update—At the moment two of the three close Senate races are breaking D—they still may go either way, but as it stands 28-24 R—a pickup of one.

In the house, pubs are elected or leading in 62, dems in 58, and 2 districts have reported nothing. 8 districts to watch 3, 24, 25 (pubs leading narrowly) 13, 43, and 45 (dems leading narrowly) and 2 and 12 (no precincts reporting yet.

One of the close Mississippi Senate Seats—37—went pub as the last precinct came in. Pubs safe in 28 senate seats, plus up by 103 votes in Senate district 18 with one precinct out. Dems safe in 22, plus up by 54 votes in Senate district 4 with 16 precincts out. Likesly either 29-23 republican or 30-22.

Mississippi Senate should be a pick of of 2 or 3 seats.

Mississippi House should be a pick up of the chamber—Pubs leading or elected in 63 (which would be a pick up of 9), with only one of these being close and 62 required for control. Dems leading or elected in 58, with several of these being close, and one seat with no precincts reporting.
