I share your fundamental concern over Newt. However, I don’t see any electable candidates who are less statist than Newt. In my dreams, Paul would have a chance. But barring him...Newt’s the man.

Cain seems like a nice guy, but he simply doesn’t have the experience. Gingrich always has an instant, detailed response- no need to prevaricate- because he already has intimate familiarity with almost any issue.

I could see Newt/Cain; Newt-Obama and Cain-Biden seem like pretty natural debate matchups. On the other hand, I would be nervous about Cain-Obama. Cain’s only chance would be his charm.

I think Cain has what it takes to be a decisive leader. As long as he picks the right people to be around him, I think he will do fine.

Oh, please. An avocado could beat Obama. He knows nothing.

If Ron Paul had his foreign policy right, he would be my man. Eliminate 6 cabinet posts and bureaucracies-- terrific!

Newt is bright but has too much baggage but is too self-absorbed (see my other posts in this thread). Herman Cain's sincerity and warm personality will go a long way to counter Obama's lies and vapid smiles in a debate. I think Obama would be scared of Cain or of Gingrich in any fair debate (dialogue) such as this one.

In a debate against Obama, Cain will not be able to "pass" on the question to see what the other guy says, or to buy more time to think about it like he did with Newt. The general concensus from the media & voters would be that Cain isn't ready. He can't just say: "Well.... I'm still learning, but hey.... I got Newt Gingrich as VP, so everything's cool.". The top guy on the ticket better be ready. I think a Cain/Gingrich ticket could lose, but a Gingrich/Cain ticket is unbeatable.
