Rick Perry's 'truly bizarre' speech: Was he drunk?
TheWeek.com ^ | October 31, 2011 | TheWeek

Texas Gov. Rick Perry raised some eyebrows — and questions about his sobriety — with an unusually expressive speech to a conservative group in Manchester, N.H., on Friday. In the speech, Perry ditched his typically reserved style and instead employed "the sort of tics, facial contortions, mimes, and muggings that one would expect from a comic performer," says Thomas Lane at Talking Points Memo. The media scuttlebutt is largely based on an anonymously posted YouTube compilation of "highlights" from the speech (watch the clip below), but even some in attendance were perplexed. "It was different," Manchester Mayor Ted Gatsas said. Another GOP operative said it reminded him of Democrat Howard Dean's race-ending "scream" in 2004. Perry's campaign's response? The speech simply proves that Perry is "passionate about the issues he talks about."

The reaction: Perry's performance was "truly bizarre," says Libby Spencer at The Impolitic. "He comes off as pretty well drunk. Or drugged." Yes, and though it's not a crime to be "pretty publicly lit," it's almost certainly bad politics for a presidential hopeful, says Andrew Sullivan at The Daily Beast. Well, I doubt he's drunk, says Josh Feldman at Mediaite. But his exuberance is "fun to watch." I bet "Alec Baldwin will appreciate the material for his next Perry impersonation. Look, "we're not saying that he's definitely drunk," says Max Read at Gawker, "we're just saying, watch the whole thing" and judge for yourself. Have a look:

I wont forget what Cain said and how he came out after Perry for the hunting lease story. Not because it offended me but because it didn't make sense.

If you watched Cain on Face the Nation he laid out the exact plan for border security Perry laid out from the onset.

He said there would probably not be an electric fence and it wouldn't go the length of the border. His remarks about not supporting Perry were supposed to be based on his lack of willingness to secure the border. It came off as a Romney talking point as does "Perry's a drunk" and "Anita rules Perry". He's been my governor for 10 years and that has never been the case.

Perry is a drunk, happens to a lot of boys living with alpha females. Poor thing.

I watched the video and he didn't seem drunk to me. A little goofy for a political speech but not stoned.

I'm not perrywinkle but there is too much bashing of opponents {and I am guiltier of this than most posters}, but I try not to knowingly lie about my opponents.

I don't know if he is a drunk or not, but in my view, he's not drunk in this video.

I didn’t think he was drunk either....but then I thought if he would have been drunk, he at least might have an excuse. LOL

Watch the entire speech!
Drunk? Ridiculous anyone, “supposedly” on our side, would go along with smears like this, and entertain it as fact, without anything concrete to follow it up with. Big deal a few animated moments. How sad and ridiculous. Every day there seems to be a new downer from even our own side.

I like that he said his campaign is about FREEDOM. He speaks about our founding fathers, Pro-life, struggles of the family life right now and need for jobs. Perry presented a good speech with a positive message.

I understand what happened post-Alamo. My point is “Victory or Death” is not the best slogan for a campaign....especially when your political career is closer to the latter.

I don't believe he was drunk either. But if this is how he conducts himself when he is supposedly relaxed then heaven help us all should he ever be confronted with real life problems as a President, like a nuclear crazed despot from say, Pakistan and Iran talking about nuking Israel or even the US! His line then might be something like 'can't we all just get along' (and giggling all the while saying it).

It is not up to me to prove he isn't drunk, it is up to him. Now where is his evidence.

Great thing about the Internet, you can claim to be superman if you wish, and what you think is only important to you.

I think he was sleep deprived or on some meds or something. Seemed odd and punchy.

Here’s the entire speech which is nothing like the hatchet job. This site used to be really good at weeding out this kind of manufactured smear but hey things have changed and not for the better.

Here’s a report from an ABC reporter who actually was there in attendance.

I didn't need to see Howard Dean's entire speech to think his mannerisms were creepy and inappropriate.

And I don't need to see the rest of Perry's speech to conclude that that was some major-league weirdness.

I guess when the video is highly spliced and edited that would make it bizarre. This site used to be good at calling out the shenanigans and posting facts.

Here’s the entire unedited speech here.

Try watching the unedited version instead of the obvious hatchet job first. Freepers used to be better than this in calling out the manufactured hatchet jobs.

I meant if if if any allegations were even slightly true. I donated 2x to Cain since hearing of this. I Freep using one finger on an iPad lately ( holding a baby) so I sometimes don’t explain myself best.

And plus you are letting the media control the message by even querying if the allegations are true or false! That’s what they want you to be doing! They want you to care if it’s true and dump him if it is!

The best way to fight the media’s Alinsky treAtment is to say, no matter what they uncover about our guy, SO???

We have to stop being Charlie brown to the media’s football!

Perry’s speech was embarrassing to watch. Could be he was on medication. Whatever the explanation, he surely is not presidential.

Evidently it is now ok to slur the GOP candidates without any proof just because they are running against your favorite. Remember when you start up that sort of crap that its a two way street.
