Still no solution for illegal immigrants' long-term care costs
Houston Chronicle ^ | October 30, 2011 | TODD ACKERMAN

....What is clear is that the practice stirs passionate responses on both sides of the immigration debate.

Geoffrey Hoffman.... describes it as "patient dumping" or "private deportation" and calls it "despicable." Noting deportation is the "exclusive province" of the federal government, not hospitals, he says forcing patients to "accept" repatriation back to a country where there may be no hope of follow-up care can "only reflect badly on our great nation."

By contrast, Mark Krikorian....argues that there are "real-world limits" to the level of health care U.S. institutions should provide non-citizens. He says that it's one thing to provide the life-saving emergency care federal law requires, quite another to provide lifelong, bankruptcy-causing or premium-raising care "to people here illegally in the first place."

Beneath the rhetoric, there's no denying the cost of such care. In 2010, for instance, the Harris County Hospital District [Houston,TX] spent nearly $170 million on the care of illegal immigrants. That was up from $100 million in 2007.

From 2005 to 2008, states were able to recoup some of those costs thanks to federal funding - Texas got about $45 million a year - aimed at compensating states for the emergency care of illegal immigrants the law requires hospitals provide. The program, pushed by Texas and other states that bear the brunt of such care, was not renewed after 2008.

Still, the real problem isn't hospitals, which transfer most all patients, both U.S. citizens and illegal immigrants, once urgent care is no longer needed and the bed is needed for other patients. It's long-term care facilities, unable to afford to accept patients, like Martinez, who don't have insurance. It remains for hospitals, obligated by federal regulation to arrange post-hospital care for those who need it, to find alternatives and to provide care indefinitely if they can't....

Yes. I assume you’re also familiar w their slogan: “Por La Raza todo, Fuera de La Raza nada”.

From Yahoo Answers:

Why is “Por La Raza todo, Fuera de La Raza nada” a slogan of MEChA?
It roughly translates to “For the race everything, outside the race nothing”.

Because they are racist. But they are not white racist, so it is ok with democrats and the media.

[Me again] But of course Perry confronted La Raza on their racist goals, foundation, existence, plans, etc. etc.

I will relish reading his quotes, in which he told them their slogan is a racist crock that has no business in the USA.

You’re running out of sanity.

Do you take the time to eat and sleep in between posting Perry threads?

I am absolutely aware of what that stands for. I have also never thought that our nation would be brought to its knees because of them.

Now with the ‘dream act’ in cali, we are joining them. we will be mowing their lawns and cleaning their toilets.

The transformation of the Golden State, which I have witnessed in my lifetime, is beyond belief. Thirty years ago it would have read like a bad dystopian novel. Yet even w that horrifying example staring them in the face, some in TX don’t get it. Some, thankfully, do. Let’s hope the latter prevail.

No one who considers themselves a conservative- or that claims to be serious about the border issues should be speaking to La Raza at all, No way! La Raza is a very radical group and formally recognizing them in any makes them seem credible...truly a bad idea.

I for one am very tired of candidates and Presidents that sit on the fence and play both sides. Fed up with those that say they are tough on border issues and then insult those that really are to distance themselves and pander to get hispanic votes. Newsflash- not a good idea to insult those you need to vote for you. Another newsflash- many hispanics also want to secure the border, and those that don’t will NEVER vote for a conservative.

There can be NO reform or workable plan without first securing the border. That has been proven over and over, no point in doing the same thing and expecting different results. Any “plan” that in any way helps illegals causes more illegals to pour into this country and as long as the border is not secure even speaking of such solutions only creates more problems. The only “plan” we ever hear boils down to amnesty and amnesty should NEVER be considered in any way without a secure border.
