Italian riot police fired tear gas and water cannons Saturday in Rome as violent protesters hijacked a peaceful demonstration against corporate greed, smashing bank windows, torching cars and hurling bottles.
A protester hurls a canister during clashes in Rome, Saturday. Protesters smashed the windows of shops in Rome and torched a car as violence broke out during a demonstration in the Italian capital.
Elsewhere, hundreds of thousands nicknamed "the indignant" marched without incident in cities across Europe, as the "Occupy Wall Street" protests linked up with long-running demonstrations against European governments' austerity measures.
Heavy smoke billowed in downtown Rome as a small group broke away and wreaked havoc in streets close to the Colosseum and elsewhere in the city.
Clad in black with their faces covered, protesters threw rocks, bottles and incendiary devices at banks and Rome police in riot gear. With clubs and hammers, they destroyed bank ATMs, set trash bins on fire and assaulted at least two news crews from Sky Italia.
Riot police charged the protesters repeatedly, firing water cannons and tear gas. Around 70 people were injured, according to news reports, including one man who tried to stop the protesters from throwing bottles.

Really?
The Media Bias on display here is breathtaking.
First of all, these "peaceful protests" were not "hijacked."
That is who these people are: Marxist, Leftist, Socialist scum.
Secondly, take a look at the photo that AP and NPR have lead with - it is clearly photoshopped to protect the identity of the violent thug (see his black "mask"), and they even drew black "underwear" on him so he didn't look worse!
Finally, remember how quickly the media "linked" Conservatives to the wacko anarchist shooter of Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, and they did so in the first 2 minutes of every wire story?
Incredible!
I can think of something more effective to use to make sure these people don't disrupt the peace again.
A group known as "The Mildly Annoyed" seriously thought about attending, but had to do laundry, wash hair, clean the hamster's cage, pay some bills, etc.
These aren’t the rioters you’re looking for.
Exactly... This was no “hijack”, the Italians participating in these demonstrations are not “peaceful” to begin with. And anyone involved in these “protests” who actually believe they are starting a “non-violent” revolution are woefully ignorant - they ARE the “useful idiots”.
That is kind of an odd photo. Is the guy even there and why is the can behind him if he’s throwing it in the fire?
And the Mildly Miffed went straight to the market and bought some cheese.
Great....we are going to Rome on Monday!!!
One of these malcontents could throw a bottle or rock at me, hit me in my head, render me unconscious, then I have no means of self defense whatsoever. This would constitute the use of deadly force.
That’s why I say let these occu’peers stay on the parks undisturbed. Before long they’ll start eating their own which is all we ask anyway!
Ya’d think he’d pull up his drawers, at least!
I read that they were rioting in the square at Saint John Lateran. That church is in my opinion the most beautiful in Rome, maybe the world, and I would have no trouble or qualm with firing a machine gun into any crowd of "protesters" who threatened it -- none whatsoever. Critics of my attitude will recall our Lord's reaction to a similar rabble (cf. Mark 11:1519, 11:2733, Matthew 21:1217, 21:2327, Luke 19:4548, 20:18, and John 2:1316).
They better not RUIN the RUINS!!
LOL!
We loved Rome, but we made the mistake of going there in July.
So there we were, in 103 degree heat, plus we took our children, who were then something like 10, 7, and 5 years old.
But, we still loved it.
I am sure the Fascist/Liberal scum will be tired/hungover by the time you get there.
But, don't ride the subways. Pick pockets galore!
We were there in summer the first time....YIKES!!!! Hotter than HELL!!
We lived in London at the time and there were way more pickpockets in London, but I hear that Rome is REALLY bad now!
I suspect that the mask is his black t-shirt wrapped around his face.
I suspect that the mask is his black t-shirt wrapped around his face.
Bill Mahr and Donny Deutch get their wish
