Protests go global, rampage, tear gas in Rome (Big Government Anarchist take over)

Hundreds of hooded, masked protesters rampaged through Rome in some of the worst violence in the Italian capital for years Saturday, torching cars and breaking windows during a larger peaceful protest against elites blamed for economic downturn.

Police repeatedly fired tear gas and water cannon in attempts to disperse them but the clashes with a minority of violent demonstrators stretched into the evening, hours after tens of thousands of people in Rome joined a global "day of rage" against bankers and politicians.

Smoke rose over many parts of the neighborhood between the Colosseum and St John's Basilica, forcing many residents and peaceful demonstrators to run into buildings and churches for shelter as militant protesters ran wild.

After police managed to push the well-organized radicals away from the St John's area, they ravaged a major thoroughfare, the Via Merulana — building barricades with garbage cans and setting the netting of the scaffolding of a building on fire.

Discontent is smoldering in Italy over high unemployment, political paralysis and 60 billion euros ($83 billion) of austerity measures that have raised taxes and the cost of health care.

Sorry but there’s no such thing as a “big government anarchist”; an anarchist is AGAINST government. These are just thugs.

So let me get this straight...

Italy is broke because of lavish entitlements, and these prigs demand more porridge or they’ll burn the kitchen down!?

The riots in Italy and elsewhere are the inevitable result of a socialist government that can no longer steal enough from it’s productive citizens to support the ever-larger population of takers. I now believe that Ayn Rand was a secular prophetess.

I’m less concerned with the protests in Rome than I am with the 150 or so protesters here in small town Roseburg, OR. They were waving the same anti capitalist signs they saw on the net or TV news. They are “occupying” the local VA hospital grounds. None looked employable if I were hiring.

You are correct.

Once upon a time, I called myself an anarchist (I don't anymore). I did the reading. I knew what I was saying when I said it. I didn't like government, and I did like personal freedom. For me (although not for many anarchists) anarcho-capitalism made sense. Let the individuals and the businesses do what they wanted, and avoid coercive laws.

At the time (1980's) most anarchists that I met told me that anarchism cannot be "rightwing" and cannot embrace "capitalism". I was pretty much ostracized.

Today, the so-called "anarchists" are basically thugs and Marxists. They know what it right for everyone, and they want a big, powerful government put into place that will give them things and force everyone to be "fair".

A bigger bunch of fools, I've never seen.

Exactly...and clearly stated. I wonder if these morons realize that the more people climbing aboard the wagon leaves less people to pull it. What happens when there’s nobody left to pull the wagon? Guess that comes back to your anarchy comment.

Nor do they understand the peace symbol (aka the Nero’s cross.) But then again, based on their actions, maybe they do.

We lucked out and missed major protests while in Athens and Roma last Saturday, they started closing roads early in the afternoon.. hope cooler heads prevail.. neither country needs street riots in their current financial straits.. regardless of where, we saw lots of troops&police and well armed so they will give it a good go and not cower to the street mobs if shoved too hard..
