You can now add peanut butter, a long-time recession staple food item, to the list of things that "the 99 percent" may no longer be able to afford. Thanks to droughts, the price of peanut butter has gone up from $450 a ton to $1,150 a ton in just one year and now peanut butter makers are about to pass on the increased costs to consumers.
The Wall Street Journal reports that wholesale prices for Jif are going up 30 percent beginning in November. Peter Pan will increase its prices by as much as 24 percent in a couple of weeks. Skippy prices are already 30 to 35 percent higher now than they were a year ago, and Kraft Foods Inc., which launched Planters peanut butter in June, is raising its prices by 40 percent on October 31.
It will be interesting to see if consumers cut back on their peanut butter consumption in light of the rising cost and tough economy.

Puns aside, we haven’t yet began to feel the full effects of the drought. I’ve seen it personally - we buy a lot of fresh foods from farmers markets directly from the farmers and prices have gone up while selection and sizes have gone down. I can’t imagine what it will be like on a national level.

Again, inflation caused by government. Federal law limits peanut farming and imports. Peanut farmer Jimmy Carter is smiling all the way to the bank.
PB has become an important source of protein as prices have risen. This is not pleasant news.

One pound of Smuckers Natural is only $2.48 at Walmart. So, likely $3.30+, soon. We read this earlier and stocked up. It has a 6 month sell by date and peanut oil can go rancid, but kept cool and dark it should be good for longer, unopened. My husband could live on the stuff, so it goes pretty fast, around here.
The ones w/hydrogenated oils would last longer, I suppose. Most of them are what I would call *peanut spread*, though, not real peanut butter.

Thanks for the info. I love Smuckers. When I head to the Philippines for business, I can’t believe there is an underground barter system for Smuckers that has been going since the 80’s. It really is popular, even in SE Asia.
Might even be considered a case of arachibutyrophobia.
