MEZHDURECHENSK, RUSSIA (BNO NEWS) -- A grandmother committed suicide in southern Russia on Saturday after two dogs mauled a one-year-old baby to death, local media reported on Monday.
The tragedy happened on Saturday at a home in Mezhdurechensk, a city in Russia's Kemerovo Oblast, when a one-year-old baby boy was left alone at a home. He is believed to have walked or crawled to a room where two dogs, a Staffordshire terrier and a pitbull, were kept.
The Russian ITAR-TASS news agency, citing police, reported that the boy's grandmother committed suicide after she found the lifeless body. It was not immediately known if the boy was in the care of the grandmother or how long and why he was left alone.
Governor Aman Tuleyev has taken personal control of the investigation and questioned whether certain dogs should be banned. "This country has seen of late a wave of accidents in which dogs attacked people and such situations are especially appalling when small kids are victimized," the governor said.

Alomost as horrible as that other Russia story, about the mother getting cellphone calls from her daughter who was being eaten by bears.
The class of dogs known as ‘pit bulls’ and the Staffordshire Terrier
“1 In 1935, the American Kennel Club (AKC) agreed to register pit bull dogs, but only under the name Staffordshire terrier. This was done to distance the breed from its continued use in dogfighting. Thus, the pit bull and the Staffordshire terrier was one in the same, yet held two different names.
2 In 1972, the AKC renamed the breed to the American Staffordshire terrier. Though the American Staffordshire terrier is by definition a pit bull, many owners claim they are different breeds and shelters adopt out pit bulls under the Staffordshire name to fool unsuspecting members of the public.
3 In 1996, the San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals renamed pit bulls to “St. Francis Terriers.” The hope was to make the breed more adoptable. After much screening, about 60 pit bulls were placed. The program was suspended after several of the re-dubbed dogs killed cats.
4 In 2004, while serving as the director of New York City Animal Care and Control, Ed Boks tried to rename pit bulls to “New Yorkies” also in hopes of making the breed more adoptable. Boks’ idea failed, as did his tenure in New York City, which only lasted from 2003-2005.
5 Meanwhile, dogfighters historically and presently refer to pit bulls as “bulldogs.” The American bulldog, which is unrecognized by the AKC, was only recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) in 1999.
6 Furthermore, the breed was called the “American pit bulldog” up until the 1970s.
7 The many names of the pit bull over the course of history is why breed-specific legislation defines the pit bull as a “class of dogs” that includes the following breeds and their mixes: American pit bull terrier, American Staffordshire terrier, Staffordshire bull terrier and American bulldog.
8 Despite pit bull owners, animal groups and dogfighters attempts to obscure the name of the pit bull breed, well-written breed-specific laws always encapsulate the pit bull’s many names.”

Extremely sad.
I know there are no bad dogs, just bad owners, etc., but maybe owning a breed that has been designed by breeders to inflict as much damage as possible isn’t such a great idea. There’s only so much harm an out-of-control golden retriever or beagle can do, but a pit bull...

When I was a child, my mother taught me how to defend myself against an attacking dog.
1. Sacrifice your left arm when the dog charges. Try like hell to get the dog to take your left arm.
2. While the dog is clamped onto your arm, place your right thumb inside the dog’s mouth, under the tongue.
3. Apply as much pressure as possible under the tongue. Be sure to grab onto the entire jaw and squeeze as hard as possible. The dog will automatically open it’s mouth and will NOT be able to close it’s mouth. (This is a reflex and against the dog’s will. This is very painful for the dog.)
4. With all your strength, twist/wrench the jaw in a circle. This should dislocate the jaw, ending the attack. If not, it usually causes enough pain the the dog will retreat.
HINT: This technique does NOT work on pit bulls. They are the only dog that lacks this reflex. (That’s what I was told, anyway.) If you try this with a pit, you will lose your thumb.
I actually had to do this once when I was a teen with a shepherd. It was shockingly easy and I didn’t even need stitches. There were only a couple of small punctures on my left forearm that didn’t even scar.
The dog screamed and retreated as soon as I clamped down and was more than ready to retreat as soon as I let it.
I think that this is the only self-defense technique that’s actually done me any good.
Pits scare the hell out of me just because there’s no way to stop them. There are stories where the dog is shot or stabbed through the head and it just keeps coming.

These dogs have to go. Maybe they can be collected to roam free in Africa with the hyenas and lions but they don’t belong in civilized countries.
The difference between UKC pit bulls and AKC Staffies is basically nothing...UKC says as much....staid AKC insists but I cannot tell and I know these dogs well

Also if you carry concealed, shoot from underneath the dogs throat upward through the skull. A dog has a very hard skull and downward shots can cause richochets and/or secondary fragmentation projectiles.
I have also read that an old hippie trick against police dogs was to grab them around the collar or scruff and start spinning in a circle, then releasing. Apparently dogs don’t recover very well from the spinning.

True. Pitbulls are always claimed to be benign, but all maulings seem to involve pitbulls.
And that's what the US Gov't said in the shot that hit JFK in the back of the head.
Of course we now know JFK was never hit in the back of the head, he was hit near the right ear and it blew a large hole in the back of his head about the size of a man's fist.
The lesson learned is shoot a man in the head and you will kill him. Shoot a dog in the head and you will likely find he will keep coming.
I just posted on another thread involving a dog attack, may have been the same one. Probably a full 95 percent of Pitbulls are owned by people who want a large, fearless dog that they can make aggressive. Pitbulls fit that, but are not inherently mean. The people that own them make them mean and then when the dogs really hurt someone, they claim the dog “was never aggressive” to try keep from being liable. It’s a lie that has made the breed itself look bad.
I’ve lived on my farm here in Texas and owned many dogs over the last 50 years and including Pits, Chows, German Sheperds, Dobermans, etc. and they were all lovable pets because they were raised to be.
