Manuel Valle scheduled to die of lethal injection in Florida
The execution of a Florida man convicted of killing a Coral Gables police officer 33 years ago is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon.
Manuel Valle, 61, is set to be executed by lethal injection at 4 p.m. at Florida State Prison near Raiford, over eight weeks after his original execution date.
Valle was convicted of fatally shooting 41-year-old Luis Pena in the neck during a traffic stop in April 1978. He was driving a stolen car when he was stopped by Pena and officer Gary Spell, who also was shot but saved by his bulletproof vest.
He will be the first Florida prisoner to be executed under a new mix of lethal drugs.
The execution has been delayed twice as courts reviewed appeals that claimed the new mix of drugs would cause pain. Those appeals were rejected by the state Supreme Court and a federal appeals court. Valle's lawyers have an appeal pending before the U.S. Supreme Court.
Valle's death warrant was the first signed by Gov. Rick Scott. The execution would be the first in Florida since February of 2010.

This guy is 32 years and 6 months overdue. It is inexcusable that it took 33 years to carry out this sentence.
No wonder the Death penalty is not a viable reason not to commit murder.If the death penalty is to serve as a deterrent it has to be carried out soon after it is given.
33 years? Really? The death penalty serves no purpose unless it can be carried out in a reasonable amount of time.
A week after conviction sounds about right.
This argument that the death penalty be painless just fascinates me with its stupidity.

The US Constitution forbids “cruel and unusual punishment” not pain.
For hundreds of years hanging was considered the world over a humane method of execution the world over.
Crucifixion, drawing and quartering were considered cruel and unusual at the time of the drafting of the Constitution. Any form of execution that is nearly instantaneous such as hanging or electrocution should satisfy Constitutional standard.
I might also add that as long as the form of execution has a 90%+ success rate the occasional slip where an inmate is accidentally decapitated by the hangman should not rule out that method. Executions are no longer public and condemned is still dead. After all only the warden and a representative of the Governor are required to be present. The sensibilities of spectators should not be a concern.
If a painless death is the desired end then why make it complicated? (That is a rhetorical question. I know why. Lawyers make fees and Lefties tie up the execution in appellate courts). An overdose of heroin or any other opiate should be simple and painless. Why make it a complicated and expensive process?
Execution isn’t painless. In fact, few things in life are painless. What about childbirth? That’s probably about a gazillion times more painful than lethal injection, yet billions of women endure it gladly.
Thirty three years and how many millions of tax dollars? Such folks should get one appeal to a higher court. When that is denied they should be taken out in the prison yard and hung same day. Better, they should be taken to the gibbet in the courthouse square of the jurisdiction where they committed their crime and hung there after 24 or 48 hours public notice.
I am all for these death and life sentences being combined into one sentence, that is a short Life Sentence, no longer than thirty days.

Lunacy! He's been on death row 33 years . . . why? Who in the hell was doing the appeals for this POS? 33 is more than twice his age when he was convicted. Could someone please explain to me just how any more than 33 weeks, much less years, would be needed to wrap up this bastard's execution. 33 years?
Yes, it is a travesty that this killer should still be alive, so long after the death of his victim. Hell, the crime occurred so long ago that most of the media articles don't bother to identify the long-dead police officer. Practically the only photo of Officer Louis Pena is this tiny one displayed by the Coral Gables Police website:

Nice to know that they've gotten all their own problems sorted out over there, to the point that they can dedicate time, money and effort to interfering with American criminal cases.
This copkiller should have been hanged, not with a trapdoor and offset noose, but by being hauled slowly up from off the ground. Death by asphyxiation can take up to twenty minutes using that method leaving plenty of time for final reflections.
And the libs wonder why we’re arming ourselves to the teeth.
