Earth to Gov. Perry: True "Heart" Means No Benefits to Illegals
Townhall.com ^ | September 26, 2011 | Heidi Harris

Posted on 09/26/2011 8:49:12 AM PDT by Kaslin

It goes without saying that Rick Perry alienated the base he needs to win last week with his “no heart” on lllegal immigrants comment at the Fox News/Google debate.

Either he’s completely deaf to the concerns of real conservatives, or he’s taking our vote for granted.

Either way, he’s headed in the wrong direction, as his poor showing in the Florida straw poll demonstrates.

I honestly don’t have a simple solution for teens who are brought here illegally as children, but then again, I’m not running for President. Send them home? Home where? Let them stay? You’re rewarding their parents’ lawbreaking, and encouraging the next wave of parents to do the same.

It’s a conundrum, to be sure. But offering in-state tuition, or any other type of special benefits That’s an easy one: NO.

Why hasn’t anyone asked the most obvious question of all? If the kids are “in limbo”, without legal status, why bother subsidizing an education for them, when they can’t legally work in the U.S. and won’t be able to repay? And with unemployment so high among native born teens, why should we add millions more to the pool of job applicants?

Governor Perry doesn’t seem to understand principle. When cornered about the HPV vaccine, his response was akin to “if it will save one life”...oh brother.

Our worst legislation comes from that perspective. Tell me, Governor, is it okay to have mandates about anything, whether legislative or executive, just because someone might die? Since when is that a conservative value? Don’t we have enough bad laws?

No one wants illegal teens left in limbo, but what does that have to do with government subsidization of their education? Come to think of it, why should I subsidize anyone’s college education, native born or otherwise?

Whatever happened to investing in yourself?

Governor Perry had the chance to say- since his heart is apparently as big as the Texas taxpayers’ checkbook- that although he doesn’t want to punish those kids, they should not be subsidized by taxpayers. But instead he took a swipe at those of us who do see the principle at stake.

Big mistake, Mr. Perry.

We have a heart, we’re just tapped out.

“The path to citizenship” is an entirely different issue from taxpayer funded benefits, which in my opinion is the ONLY way to solve the illegal immigration problem.

You’ll have far fewer ants coming into your house if you don’t leave sweets lying around. Sure, the worker ants will fan out to do recon, but if they don’t find any “handouts”, they’ll go elsewhere; and they certainly won’t come back with reinforcements.

I’m not comparing illegal immigrants to ants, but the principle is the same.

Eliminating government handouts in any form; WIC, SNAP, housing, education, etc., will, by attrition, greatly reduce our illegal immigration problem. Politicians on both sides have looked me in the eye many times and sworn that “illegals don’t qualify for benefits.”

But they do, as soon as they have a child born in the U.S.

The guy coming in to pick fruit in the Imperial Valley doesn’t really worry me. We’ve always had agricultural, seasonal migration. What’s changed in the last 100 years are the additional incentives for them to stay and bring their families here, courtesy of the U.S. taxpayer.

Subsidized education, medical care and housing for the entire family of a migrant, including “anchor babies” is what’s killing us, and it’s our fault if we continue those policies.

Americans have passed these laws and allowed these programs to get completely out of control. This should be addressed honestly by our next President.

Although the entire problem can’t be solved by cutting these programs, if the only illegals we had left were at least pulling their own weight, Americans would be far less concerned.

Governor Perry and the other candidates need to stop talking about “controlling the border” or “building a wall” and get serious about what WILL solve many of the problems uncontrolled immigration causes.

Cutting programs is cheaper than building the Great Wall of Texas.

So let’s review: true conservatives don’t erode everyone’s rights to “save lives”, nor do they allow misguided compassion to subsidize lawbreakers.

Governor Perry, don’t take conservative voters for granted. We have other choices.

Besides I’m an unabashed Cain-iac anyway.

Lost my vote completely. Illegal is illegal is illegal. Not sure what the hell he and his legislators were thinking. I don’t like being called a name by anyone because I disagree. I am an American citizen. Those “special illegal alien” children are NOT Americans.

Actually, it isn't. Ants eventually return to their home colony with the food they've collected from your house. They don't move in, evict you and take over your house.

I am disappointed about Perry’s stance on immigration especially his heartless comment. Beyond his preferences for immigration reform, I am more troubled by his disregard for established federal law. The 1996 immigration law clearly indicated that the scheme used in Texas (and other states) is illegal. If illegals are offered in state tuition, then so must non resident legal residents. Regardless of Perry’s immigration policy preferences, I want to know that he will abide by the rule of law. Obama has abbrogated enforcement of immigration law beyond anything recognizable. If Perry does not indicate that he will enforce existing immigration law, I will not support him in the primary.

“Compassionate conservatism” is a lot like the expression “gun control”: it’s not about compassion and it’s not conservative.

If they are under 18, and have no legal relatives here, then they need to go back when their parents do. They can come back when they are of age by producing a birth certificate.

The anchor baby law was ill-advised and, other than repealing it now, there is nothing we can do about those children born under it.

Perry’s stand on illegals was unfortunate. His need to insult the conservative base as “heartless” was unnecessary.

Quite correct, and the ants invite other ants from all over the world to join them for the free food!

This is the problem the Lamestream press is ignoring. Obamacare gave Illegals from around the world free Heathcare. Not just Hispanics, but anywhere... and an open invitation for their friends in other countries to come and enjoy the feast!

The problem with giving Illegals children tuition is it invites the same FROM EVERY CORNER OF THE WORLD TO COME AND ENJOY THE FEAST.

And who pays for it? Three choices and the first two don't count.

And who will go Bankrupt like Greece? Yeah, the U.S. of A.

While I do understand Perry’s stand on one level, I also have to say that ultimately, he’s not doing the kids—or his constituents—any good in the long run.

What truly needs to happen is for Mexico’s people to stay home and fix their own country. Sure, it’s going to take some work, and doubtless a lot of bloodshed. We didn’t exactly take control of our own country with nary a scratch, after all. Our ancestors suffered greatly for what we have today.

I am not anti-Mexican. I just think they would live better and be better neighbors if they would just stay home and work for what they want. Lasting freedom cannot be stolen. It can only be earned.

A novel concept huh? Something you rarely hear. And Mexico needs to quit blaming its problems on the US. It's not American drug buyers driving the cartels in Mexico...it's a corrupt Mexican culture, otherwise we'd have Canadian drug cartels invading the north border too. Until Mexicans admit Mexico sucks and take care of their own problems nothing will ever change.

How is government subsidizing their education? If any student qualifies for in-state tution in Texas, that does not mean they are receiving taxpayer funding. These students must secure their own funding, whether from personal funds or via a loan.

Perry's Dream Act is like Romney's Romney-care. It is impossible (difficult) for him to repudiate it especially since he is still governor unlike Romney.

Romney says he is going to repeal Obama-care as POTUS(Duhhh, POTUSse dont repeal laws) while being forced to defend Romney-care. BLA-BLA-BLA

If the parents are deported back to Mexico, the reason the teenage children should not go with them is because the teenagers have not known Mexico as a home?

That's ridiculous. Children belong with their parents. If the parents move somewhere, they should take the children with them, even if the children are teenagers.

What do people like this writer say to military families? Children of military families have to move all the time to whatever new place the father is transferred.

I've never read an editorial lamenting how heartless it is for our military to force teenage children of military personnel to have to move to a new home they've never known before when the father receives new orders.

Maybe when Rico Perry is president he will institute a new policy that no military personnel who have teenage children can be transferred because only a person with no heart would force those teenagers to move.

Perry labeled 81% of Americans who disagree with him as "heartless." The inference was that only Perry was Truly Worthy (b/c only he had sucked up to Mexico). In one fell swoop, Perry demeaned Republicans, conservatives and Texas voters who allow him to hold office.

=====================================

BACKSTORY Perry connived his way into the presidential race----and you get the distinct feeling he connived his way into the governor's seat. That steady stream of illegals pouring into Texas tells use native-born Texans don't have much say in Senor Ricky's unbroken string of re/elections.

Senor Ricky gets away with mucho BS in Texas. Perry's been described by some Texans as a kind of a Punxsutawney Phil. When it's time for election he's out there, camaigning, pushing all the right Texas buttons. After he's elected, he disappears into his cave until it's time to wake up again.

When he does that disappearing act, big-hearted Rick gets down to the real business of governance----enriching himself. As one Texas FReeper posted: "I live in Texas. Perry’s an embarrassment......an arrogant jerk who thinks the rest of us are heartless if we don’t agree with giving tax dollars to Illegals.......rather than helping actual Americans."

========================================

PERRY SURFACES Perry did not officially enter the Iowa straw poll......but he calculatedly timed throwing his hat into the ring on the same day Bachman won the Iowa straw poll----stomping all over Bachman's hard-won victory. Perry cunningly manipulated the Iowa vote from Texas. That strategy was supposed to put him over the top. Instead he got a pathetic 700-800 write-ins ...while Iowa winners who did the right thing-—spending time and money there-—— got 4000 votes each. The Perrydactyl's were cued to "say" Ricky won Iowa.

And there was Perry---front and center---waving to Iowans, taking pics in front of prominent Iowa banners---manipulating the media to make it look like he was the winner.

The winner in his own mind.

Perry seems rather tone-deaf, which is too bad because he could have rationally explained his position on this, not so much to convince people he is right, but instead to convince them that it doesn’t reveal a basic flaw in his conservative outlook.

He operates in an environment with a good number of illegals who bring little kids into his state. The federal government will do nothing to get rid of them, so he’s stuck with them. Further, the feds require that these children of illegals be educated in Texas public shools, investing thousands of dollars integrating them into our society, teaching them our language and culture, and giving them the skills they need to be productive members of society.

Then they turn 18. They are now adults, and they are illegal. Obama won’t deport them unless engage in other criminal activity. The courts have ruled that they have many of the rights of citizens. Even if you can craft a law that would cut off official state aid, they will still get free health care, lots of federal help, and various indirect and direct state aid.

They speak english, they know little of their own countries, they have no “home” back there. Yes, that isn’t our problem, it is the fault of their parents, and I guess you could argue that kids should suffer the consequences of their parents wrong choices, but that isn’t a winning proposition politically — Americans are a compassionate people, and to some degree or another will not stand for destroying the lives of kids because of their parents choices.

So, they are 18, reasonably-well educated, moving out into the world where they won’t be deported. They will be a drain to the state economically, either because they will get assistance, or they will take jobs under-the-table, menial jobs without paying taxes, whatever.

But this is where it all breaks down. We can send them to college if they qualify, and make them even MORE productive members of society. But then what? If they are still illegal, they still can’t get jobs — they are just a higher class of bums at that point. On the other hand, they DO get jobs, somehow. They run their own businesses, somehow, they employ other people, somehow. There are millions of illegals living among us who manage to hold jobs, own homes, run businesses, provide employment, pay taxes, and be productive members of our communities.

But they are illegal. So the question is, what is “better” — a bunch of illegal high-school graduate 18-year-olds, or a bunch of illegal college-graduate 21-year-olds.

Some here think that is a simple question. I don’t. In Virginia, I supported NOT giving in-state tuition for illegals. But if Texas residents think it is better for their state to give in-state tuition to these kids (it’s not that many, because there aren’t that many who get a B-average through 3 years of high school), then I don’t have a problem with it.

Of course, I don’t have a problem with taking these same kids, and if they get a b-average in college, granting them green cards so they CAN work here if they find a job that doesn’t displace american workers; part of a comprehensive guest worker program that really advertises to americans, and keeps track of people to make sure they don’t overstay their visas.

I don’t favor giving them preference for citizenship, but I don’t mind them getting in the back of the line while they have their green cards. To the degree we WANT to allow some foreigners into this country, I think college-educated young men and women who already are ingrained in our culture and speak our language and consider themselves americans are a BETTER choice than some spanish-speaking person who just wants to come here and make some money to send home to their real country, while cheering for our soccer team to LOSE.

But I know that sounds like rewarding illegal behavior. I guess it is, but it wasn’t the kids illegal behavior. They were brought here by their parents. Unlike some here, I don’t believe the possibility of in-state tuition 12 years later is what drives someone to bring their 5-year-old into this country.

Fortunately, Perry opposes a national dream act. That is the issue for a Presidential candidate, not whether they were OK with a state deciding how to handle their illegal population. Perry also favors deporting illegals and for enhancing border security, so he should be much better than Obama at this. He opposed sanctuary cities, and spend hundreds of millions of Texas tax dollars trying to secure his border with boots on the ground.

He’s not as adamantly anti-immigrant (or anti-illegal-immigrant) as some in the conservative movement would like him to be, and that’s a good reason not to support him. But I believe he could have given his views a rational argument, like I have here, and at least he could have moved on.

But saying people who disagree with you “don’t have a heart” was just stupid. Just as talking about judging people by “the sound of their last name” was stupid. You can defend policy differences — you can’t defend stupid.

The truth is the exact opposite.

Because the TX DREAM act bill was passed with a veto proof majority it would be easy for bush2 to condemn it even now.

He won’t though because he is a “compassionate conservative” who believes in destroying America in the hope of getting some Hispanics to vote for him.

One has to ask themselves the question “Why does Mexico suck?” Given the fact that Mexico has abundant resources, great potential for agriculture, and a great setup for global trade and easy access to the Atlantic and the Pacific Oceans, you have to conclude that it is the Mexican people themselves. To sum it up: Mexico sucks because it is full of Mexicans. If Mexico had been settled by Anglo Saxon Protestants on the US with Spaniards what is now Mexico would be a world power and what is now the US would be blaming their trouble on the “colossus to the south” and on crappy, cold weather.

GOV PERRY DID NOTHING TO STOP ZETAS Texas Governor GOV PERRY looked the other away as savage Mexican Zeta gangs expand their growing drug empire inside the US, from Big D--Dallas.

==============================================

GOV PERRY DID NOTHING TO STOP ZETAS
GOV PERRY (1) sucked-up to the Mexican govt, (2) insists on open borders, (3) passed the Dream Act, (4) eased sub-prime mortgages for illegals, (5) lambasted US amnesty policy while on Mexican soil, and, (6) enticed illegals over the border with tax-subsidized giveaways.

DID GOV PERRY DO ANYTHING to stop savage Zeta drug kingpins from attending Texas colleges w/ in-state tuition?

GOV PERRY DID NOTHING TO STOP THIS There have been over 200 armed incursions from Mexico over the border onto US soil in the last ten years.

GOV PERRY DID NOT STOP THIS Federal agents and US military were ordered to avoid all contact when Third World soldiers escorted Mexican drug cartel members across our borders.

GOV GOV PERRY DID NOT STOP THIS Zeta gangs and Mexican drug cartels smuggled drugs, illegal aliens (?reconquista troops, ?terrorists bearing WMD?) over US borders. All of it aided and abetted by the Mexican govt.

===========================================

GOV PERRY DID NOT STOP THIS The Zetas ‘gulf Cartel, is a former "special forces unit" of the Mexican Army. The Zetas signature savagery is beheadings for those who d-a-r-e try to stop them. The Zetas have been in operation for years and years, and, thanks to all the US dollars they pocketed in Texas (legal and illegal), they have recently been recruiting openly in Mexico.

GOV PERRY DID NOT STOP THIS In the border city of Reynosa a banner reads, “Former soldiers sought to join armed group; good pay, $500,” “The Zetas operations group wants you, soldier or ex-soldier.”
