Tehran, Iran (CNN) -- Two American hikers imprisoned as spies in Iran for more than two years were released on bail Wednesday, Iranian and U.S. officials said.

The news of their release comes a day before Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is due to speak at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal, both 29, were convicted last month of entering Iran illegally and spying for the United States, and each sentenced to eight years in prison.

They have not yet been seen leaving Evin Prison, but their attorney, Masoud Shafiee, went into the facility earlier in the day with paperwork to show that the $500,000 bail had been paid for each of them.

These three people are either the most stupid people on earth or really spies. Who in their right mind would go to that area to,”hike.” Secondly who is exactly paying the, “bail’, (ransom) for these idiots. Some questions that need to be answered.

I’m glad they have been released.

But REALLY, WHO the Hell would go for a hike on the border between Iraq and Iran unless they DID indeed plan on espionage?

My only advice to these knuckleheads is “No matter how much fun it sounds like, please please please do not go kayaking down the Yalu River. Please!”

Background: The three Americans are anti-war, social justice and Palestine Solidarity Movement activists. They had been living and active in the Middle East, and were on holiday in Iraqi Kurdistan, an autonomous region of Iraq free from the sectarian struggle that dominates much of Iraq. They had been advised of the suitability of the region for a holiday by friends who had been there and through Internet research; and were recommended the Ahmed Awa waterfall, a popular Kurdish tourist destination, by a number of local people whilst they were in Sulaymaniyah. After visiting the waterfall, they continued walking within what they believed to be Iraqi Kurdistan, up to and including the time they were detained by Iranian border guards.

Shane Bauer, who grew up both in Onamia, Minnesota and San Leandro, California, is a freelance photojournalist and journalist who has worked for Pacifica News Service, Mother Jones, The Nation and other left-leaning media outlets, using his fluency in speaking Arabic.

Sarah Emily Shourd, who grew up in Los Angeles, California, worked in education and social justice in Damascus, Syria where she provided educational opportunities to refugees from the war in Iraq and taught English. Shourd was released by Iran on September 14, 2010 on $500,000 bail. Shourd's bail does not require that she remain in Iran, and her case will still go to trial along with Bauer and Fattal. Shourd's mother has said she had been denied treatment for serious health problems, including a breast lump and precancerous cervical cells. In May 2011, Shourd announced that she would not return to Iran for trial, citing acute ill-health.

Joshua "Josh" Fattal, who grew up in Elkins Park, Pennsylvania,[17] an environmentalist and educator, had been from January to May 2009 a teaching fellow for the International Honors Program (IHP)'s "Health and Community" study abroad program. Prior to traveling with the IHP, Fattal lived and worked at Aprovecho in Oregon, USA, exploring and promoting sustainable living practices.

Various media outlets and bloggers have confused Fattal with another Joshua Fattal, a student that has written for the teen supplement of a Jewish paper, the Yeshivah of Flatbush in Brooklyn, New York.

And, these three nut-sacks will ‘get their book’ and countless drooling interviews from every other nut-sack with a microphone. How long will it be until some elitist, self-absorbed, new-age hippie wanders into no-no land for another two-year book investment? They should be consigned into the slot of rotten, spoiled, do-nothings, and awarded nothing for their effort.

Oman receives no foreign aid from the US except some miniscule funding of visitor programs that bring influential Omanis to the US for briefings, trips, etc. to learn about the US. The US military does have prepositioned military equipment and supplies to support emergency operations in the region.

Spies?

Bingo! That's what I've been thinking all along. Of course, those who say activists or idiots or S*&^-stirring Liberal knuckle heads (lol, thanks, SMARTY) make a good point. But I can't get this nagging little thing out of my head that maybe they really do work for the CIA and we shouldn't be so quick to hate them.

Going to be interesting to see what they have to say for themselves when they get home.

It’s not a hate thing at all. It’s making the US look stupid that bugs me.

I think you are absolutely right about them.

We are in for a 24/7 MSM wet dream of fêting these two half-wits. I don’t look forward to the kind of wholesale, slobbering idolatry that only the MSM is capable of delivering.

Of course the MOVIE will not be far behind … and did I say ‘ONLY the MSM’…Hollywood will jump through its own rectum outdoing the MSM with mindless adulation!!!
