General Motors Co and its Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp signed an agreement on Tuesday to develop and build electric vehicles in the world's largest auto market.
The agreement finalizes a nonbinding memorandum on cooperation for green-vehicle development SAIC and GM signed last November. At the time, SAIC agreed to buy a 1 percent stake in GM through an initial public offering held to make GM a public company again and cut the U.S. Treasury's stake in the company.
The Shanghai GM joint venture builds Chevy, Buick and Cadillac vehicles in China.

Well, at least they have all those coal-fired power plants belching away 24/7 to recharge the electric cars.
Maybe they’ll sell another 320 cars.
Which the Chinese will power by building coal fired generation plants for a billion of them.

It seems like every job Obomas has "created" has been in China. Light bulbs, solar panels, volts, GE jobs......Exactly what has he done for us other than put us all in the poor house?
Perfect example of was I was talking about 10-15 years ago when arguing with the “Free Traders” where the manufacturing goes the research and development follows. Lose your manufacturing and you will soon lose all the advantages you once had. Next to go is dominance in higher education.

The reason our unemployment rate is so high, is because we keep sending jobs to China.
The reverse is true: If we initiate a trade war, we will begin making things in America again. Jobs will increase.

Massive corporate taxation, limitless legal vulnerability, crushing environmental regulation and pro-Union arbitrary Government: these are why industry chooses to locate away from the USA.
On FR recently we had the example of Ronnie Bryant: forced to shutter his coal mining project and lay off hundreds of workers and ancillary staff.
He had spent his life in the business, but was finally forced to quit - effectively by the EPA.
He is ground zero for what I'm talking about: a small businessmen crushed by the parasitic forces of Government.
At the bottom of that link are an amazing set of comments, where other businessmen share their stories of being forced out of business by Government. Not (for instance) by the Chinese - but by Government. It makes compelling reading.
Protectionism would be the final nail in the coffin. The last vestiges of American industry would be turned into feather-bedded welfare cases, and freeborn Americans would be forced to buy their stuff from the Government store.

“Free trade” is driving jobs overseas.

Don’t forget, this is a deliberate effort to destroy American Capitalism,
and we see it going, piece by piece, due to the deliberate policies of 0bama and the left/democRats.
While I agree that we have a host of problems some of them (crony capitalism) as bad or now even worse then our insane trade policy. Our trade policy in insane.

Unilateral American surrender is when you as a country declare that you can’t compete with nasty foreigners, and plead for the Government to protect you with tariffs.
I don’t know why you would think that this is an attractive proposition on FR.

If Gibson left the country and started making Guitars in Singapore: would the protectionists on FR blame that on Free Trade too?
If you don't like it, then reduce Government-imposed burdens on American industry and American Wealth-production. Either compete with China, or admit you can't and go into industries where you can.
But don't force your taxpayers to featherbed selected domestic industries. That just turns them into particularly toxic components of an enlarged welfare system. See also: "General Motors"

A simple oversight, I’m sure.
While we have that problem too (socialism), our insane trade policy predates it. Things (trade imbalance) got really bad as a result of some kind of a deal our leaders made with Communist China back during the first Bush administration. While I don’t know the details of the “deal” the results are devastating to American workers and small business. Now Big Business, and the super rich appear to be the primary benefactors of moving just about all our movable jobs off shore. Germany is doing just fine keeping it’s jobs in Germany.
