have you seen the paths of hurricanes?....some of them seemed to turn on a dime.

They can - but this usually requires some other weather influence to push it around -- a blocking ridge that it can't break through or something like that. Before such things happen, the forward motion speed of the storm will slow fairly dramatically... often almost stopping all together.

Irene is looking fairly "typical" -- initial westward motion, turn to the north, accelerate to the north and northeast without any gimmicks.

I hope these forecasters are as sure as they seem to be.

Well, unfortunately, they aren't sure... they certainly know about the lives at stake, but this is obviously a science that has a lot of error in it... see post 297 for all the evidence you need about that (which could scare the daylights out of you).

I only posted the Florida piece once.

You missed her point entirely: you just can't go around posting "parts of Florida are under evacuation orders" without (a) more specifics (Florida's coastline is a huge place); and (b) at least a follow-up link to the text of the actual order.

So with that in mind: Ocracoke Island is being Evacuated.

This hurricane is 'organized'...

11:00 AM EDT Wed Aug 24
Location: 22.4°N 73.9°W
Max sustained: 115 mph
Moving: NW at 12 mph
Min pressure: 956 mb... hmmm, maybe the 115mph is a little under done?

the progress of Irene.

Winds 115 mph, 956mb
Moving NW at 12 mph

Hurricane force winds extend 50 miles from the center and tropical storm force
winds extend outward 205 miles from the storm center.

I’m continuing with hurricane preps, just in case, but everyone seems convinced it’s going to miss us. The pictures sure still look like it’s headed here. Whatever, I’m ready.

We’re all monitoring - believe me.

I just realized something really funny or ironic. We all joke about people stocking up on TP with the first hint of storm warnings (’canes or blizzards) and wouldn’t you know it, I’m fully prepared for this storm, but I just realized I’m on the last roll of TP in the house. SIGH

...You got them Grandma, I’m in Norfolk and I’ve been in a few, Most of the time been OK, but, just can’t predict them. Times I said, let them come and they didn’t, this time I don’t want it, and it’ll probably be a bad scene...

If you are fully prepared for the storm, you have a full tank of gas and cash—enough to get to the store to buy more TP.

Some household hints are only helpful to barbarians like myself, but a roll of Brawny is paper towels, TP and coffee filters for two months here aboard Wind Dancer.

LOL!!! I’m planning on picking it up when I go out later. My fave bartender told everyone last night the hurricane party was starting today at our fave watering hole on Chincoteague.

We were planning on spending the weekend in Delaware, but we’ve been scaling back those plans by the hour. The original plan was to leave Friday morning and come home Sunday evening. We changed that to Sunday morning, then Saturday evening - last plan was Saturday morning. I’m sure that will change again this evening.

Just a bit of trivia.

Did you know that NC Gov Beverly Perdue’s Moother’s name is Irene?

I feel certain she has thought of her Mother’s name during this weather event at least once.
