I would not stick my bare hands in any big dogs mouth...hit them on the nose cartilage is probably more effective
they bite so quick ...you would get chewed up
you can get them to lock onto something not fatal...like a pants leg...maybe
I have never been dog attacked...folks I know who deal with many big uncut aggressive male dogs...say a camp of hog hunting bullies...you’ve seen them on TV..with the neck guards...chasing down big hogs in SC or GA
those guys keep prods or axe handles or of course guns
if you have ever seen two dogs lock up...any bulldog locks up fighting...unless it’s the throat it’s not often fatal..between bullies that is
you have to pull them apart literally...you tie up the legs of each
and then water or prod them...in the heat of fight they can bite you too
this is not dog whisperer stuff and I would not have a child walk around unsupervised into a pack of 120 pound hog hunting performance bulldogs...nor would I have one laying around unsupervised an attack trained guard dog of any kind
but thwarting a pit bull attack bare handed is a tall order...nigh impossible for a small person
I am a big man, resounding voice and presence...dogs respect me..all well and good...I just know my way around them usually...many years of it...but with children or fearful adults it can be a whole new game...and dogs pick it up...some women can handle big dogs too...my ex girlfriend handled our big Rott boy...uncut and he saved her life from rape and possible murder from home invader.
My big male bully...gone hunting where he is better suited...was very protective of my wife and viewed her as a female..like big uncut males do..shamlessly but he adored her..not fear but love and protective..only time he snarled at me was once when I swatted her bare arse when she walked by in her dressing room..she of course thought he ruled the roost

And that’s why I would never neuter Odin.
He does see me as his “mate” and reacts appropriately if I’m threatened.
As I’ve stated before, my first two Dobes saved me from enduring 5 *more* years of sexual abuse by an uncle.
I owe those dogs [and Dobes, in general] *so* much that I can never hope to fully repay them.
All of the neutered male rescue Dobes I’ve had were more a visual/psychological deterrent because all their “drive” had been left on the surgery floor.
Even my little spayed Kayhill bitch would throw everything she had into protecting me, bless her heart.
You’re obviously a big, deep-voiced dude yet I, being a runty little squeaky thing, have never had problems with “respect”.
I have to rely on solely on body language and attitude to maintain my ‘alpha status’.
Odin’s “daddy” is a big, basso profundo and Odin respects and loves him dearly but he is, at the heart of it all, *my* dog and it’s fortunate that ‘daddy’ is not an abusive husband.

Experienced that more than once negotiating the stick while playing fetch.
The maulings and deaths are unfortunate. I wonder what percentage involved undisciplined or radicalized dogs.
