New leukemia treament exceeds 'wildest expectations'
NBC News ^ | 8/10/11 | Robert Bazell

Doctors have treated only three leukemia patients, but the sensational results from a single shot could be one of the most significant advances in cancer research in decades. And it almost never happened. In the research published Wednesday, doctors at the University of Pennsylvania say the treatment made the most common type of leukemia completely disappear in two of the patients and reduced it by 70 percent in the third. In each of the patients as much as five pounds of cancerous tissue completely melted away in a few weeks, and a year later it is still gone

This is great.

Now if only they could come up with a shot that would do the same with liberals.

This is a miracle of a dynamic, free society. Once Obamacare takes full effect, kiss break-throughs like this good-bye.

Good news. Too bad it wasn’t discovered and perfected 5 years ago, my dad would still be around.

They could find the fountain of youth this pm and the FDA would make them test it for 10-12 years.

Using a modified, harmless version of HIV, the virus that causes AIDS, they inserted a series of genes into the white blood cells. These were designed to make to cells target and kill the cancer cells. After growing a large batch of the genetically engineered white blood cells, the doctors injected them back into the patients.

“So why has this remarkable treatment been tried so far on only three patients?

Both the National Cancer Institute and several pharmaceutical companies declined to pay for the research. Neither applicants nor funders discuss the reasons an application is turned down.”

Because if it works, it would eliminate the Billions of dollars made from current treatment programs.
Not to mention the impact on begging for research dollars, private and federal.

I have stopped donating to all cancer research. Fundraisers are everywhere and over the years billions of dollars have been given and where are we? I don't see much progress at all and it seems they always keep saying that a cure is about 5 years away--it's always 5 years.

I don't take any of them seriously anymore. They've cried wolf too many times.

I wonder if all of those people wearing pink ribbons know that their work is not being used on things like this.

You don’t see any progress?!? I’m surrounded by friends and relatives who have recovered from different kinds of cancers that they would not have survived ten or fifteen years ago. True, people still die; cancer has not been cured. But far more people beat it than ever used to in the past. Science marches on. What do you want?—you think we should just give up, stop funding research, and just let people die without a fight?
