Here's the headline: "Shock Forecast: NOAA Predicts Heat Index of 116 in Washington Friday." Not temperature. So the arbitrary, "You're gonna feel like it's 116," but let me ask you, how many of you were anywhere where it was 116 in the last few years, months, to know what 116 feels like?
Why not just report the temperature of what it's gonna be? It's gonna be 100 degrees, it's gonna be 103. That happens every summer in Washington. And now it's gonna be 116! It's gonna be deadly hot, unprecedented heat, 116 heat index. More manipulation. You wait. What's predictably to follow here? Global warming stories.

Same thing happens in the winter with the Windchill temperature. It’s not -20 below, it’s zero and that is bad enough.
I wonder how Rush feels about wind-chill readings.
So does water boil at 180 if it feels like 213?
I agree some of the motivation is paving the way for global warming propaganda. But, the other part is just sensationalism. There are so many outlets vying for the consumer’s attention, that they cooked, (pun intended), this “feels like” thing to get more notice.
The feels like is the analog to the wind chill in winter.
It’s nonsense, tell me the temperature, tell me the humidity, I can figure it out.

Maybe ‘feels like’ is just a bad term.
Like wind chill, it’s an additional affect that needs to be considered for a person to understand the effect of the weather on them when they venture out.

95 in Tucson does NOT feel like 95 in Houston, understanding of which may be above his pay grade. He needs to stick with poking fun at politicos.
The problem is not with the heat index or wind chill...it is when the media report the heat index or wind chill as the actual ambient temperature. This is plain wrong!
Working in a dry heat vs a heat with humidity (dew point) or working in cold with no wind vs cold with 30 mph wind makes a very big difference. Nothing wrong with the wind chill or heat index...
Spend some time in 95 degree heat and 20% humidity and some time in 95 degree heat with 80% humidity and tell me there’s no difference.
While the temperature is the same, in 80% humidity sweat doesn’t evaporate, effectively causing the body to cool less efficiently.
However a reasonably intelligent person doesn’t need a heat index to tell them that its damn hot. (Heat index of 109 degrees here right now.)
Anybody that works outside in the element can attest to why we NEED a heat index and a chill factor.
Still feels like 62 degrees here in the Pacific Northwest, and that’s not counting the wind chill. Been 10-15 degrees below normal all Summer. Our warmest temp of 80 lasted 72 minutes. There still making jokes about our 2011 Summer being 72 min long.
I’m hoping somebody can answer this one for me. I’ve had no luck finding the answer.
I understand the idea behind the heat index. It combines the effects of temperature and humidity to show what it “feels like” to the body.
The problem is that the temperature it “feels like” itself has a humidity level.
So if it “feels like” 90F, it feels like 90F at what humidity level? There is no such thing as temperature without a corresponding humidity level.
110 in Tuscon feels better than 95 in Houston.
I've never liked the heat index measure, either. I think a wet bulb temperature would be a better measure of what the air "feels" like but most folks probably wouldn't understand it.

I’ve always thought a good cartoon would be two guy’s slaving away in hell, with one saying to the other “Yeah, but it’s a dry heat.”
so why isn’t it enough to simply state the truth? It’s 95 with high humidity?
Or have a humidity index that doesn’t involve skewing the real temp.
The reporters are absolutely breathless over this killer heat dome that is smothering us all!
They love to use those artificially high numbers.
I just went and soaked my t shirt and I’m feeling pretty good for now.
The National Weather Service has issued something called an Excessive Heat Alert for our area today.
What exactly is “excessive”? And who besides the Creator of our plant is qualified to judge what “excessive heat” is?
They are trying to tell me what or how I will feel? Nonsense.
