Cord-Cutting On Rise, 10% Of Homes By 2015 (Dinosaur Media DeathWatchâ„¢)
Media Daily News ^ | July 21, 2011 | David Goetzl

Posted on 07/21/2011 8:22:08 AM PDT by abb

A new report estimates about 4.5 million, or 4%, of U.S. homes will have only over-the-top delivery of video service by the end of this year. That figure, according to SNL Kagan, is projected to rise to 12.1 million over the ensuing four years, which would be about 10% of homes.

They would rely on Netflix and Amazon for content.

Kagan says over-the-top consumers "impacted the subscriber counts for multichannel service providers in 2010." They are expected to "exert competitive pressure going forward."

Executives at cable providers say there is scant evidence of cord-cutting, and reductions in subscriber rolls are due more to factors such as the economy or slowed household formations.

In 2010, the second and third quarters marked the first declines in subscribers with a multichannel subscription, but the figure did increase for the full year.

Kagan estimates that about 85% of homes had a subscription at the end of 2010. (The figure counts homes with multiple subscriptions just once.)

I just cut my satellit plan from $70 to $15/month due to nothing being on TV anyway and half the channels were trying to sell me jewelry or get rich on real estate deals.

Did this about 4 months ago....don’t miss it at all! Occasionally my husband would like to SEE one of the baseball games....but, we have XM, so he can listen most times, plus HIS team, the Mariners, are doing lousy! And, now, he’s discovered we have a lot of good books in our house!

And so many channels are pushing liberalism and obscenity.

Comedy Central is the poster boy for that. Shows such as Chelsea Lately have a strong sexual theme, and she uses her show to push homosexual marriage.

And all of those stand-up comic shows on Comedy Central have half of the routine bleeped out, because the “comedians” are using obscene language which can’t be heard on basic cable channels.

Then, you can watch the liberal news on Jon Stewart’s program. And even he gets bleeped out sometimes. I am amazed that liberals have trouble expressing themselves wihout using obscene language.

People like to make fun of past standards, such as NBC being concerned about Barbara Eden’s belly button on “I Dream of Jeannie”. But, are we really better off today, when anything goes?

Heck, if they made “I Dream of Jeannie” today, nothing would be left to the imagination. The master would be commanding Jeannie to do all sorts of things I can’t write about here, and it would be okay on prime time TV today.

Heck, can you imagine all of the innuendo if they had a show like “Gilligan’s Island” today? Can you imagine all the titilation they would provide by showing different roommate pairings???

But on Gilligan’s Island, I wonder who the obligatory gay character would be?????????

TV is a wasteland. The few channels that are not a freak show or do not celebrate the dregs of American society (those few might be the Weather Channel, History Channel, etc...) I can get the same or better info from a book or online.

We dropped cable. Don’t miss it much at all.

One thing we were unprepared for, though—our typical cable fare was stuff like Dirty Jobs, Deadliest Catch, and science programs, and the occasional trashy show for laughs. When we sat down to watch broadcast TV (CBS, ABC, NBC), we were actually shocked at how tawdry and vile it had become. And now, unfortunately, there wasn’t much else to choose from.

Anymore, we tend to stick to PBS stations if we watch broadcast. But otherwise, it’s lots of Netflix.

Some years ago, I realized I don’t need to be entertained by actors and athletes. Now I have more time to DO things rather than watch other people do things.

Hmmmmm....... You folks are making me think that I should take a close look at Netflix.

Frankly, I’ve never bothered to even look into Netflix, because my satellite works just fine.

We cut cable over 10 years ago, mostly because their service sucked and they drove me crazy with the mystery add on’s to the bill and continuous rate increases.

I guess I need to see what the Netflix is all about.

Netflix recently announced they were spitting off streaming only - effectively doubling the price if you were on the 1 DVD at a time plan.

You can still get streaming only at the $7.95/mo, but without getting shipped DVD, unless you pay another $7.95.

TV is a wasteland.

That sums it up. I never got a "box" after those became necessary to watch TV. I don't miss it one bit. Reading books, going on FR, and watching an occasional movie on DVD are sufficient entertainment venues for the OldPossum.

In theory a good idea, but the loss of watching many live events and the monthly download caps imposed by Internet Service Providers could put a kibosh to the idea.

Indeed, the monthly download cap could be the downfall of Netflix itself.
