SAN FRANCISCO - The Yemeni man accused of trying to storm the cockpit of a San Francisco-bound flight in May will be examined to determine his competency to stand trial, his attorney said Friday. A federal judge in San Francisco appointed a doctor to evaluate Rageh Almurisi, 26, starting next week, Almurisi's attorney Christopher Morales said.
The U.S. Attorney's Office raised no objection to the decision.
Almurisi, who has family in Vallejo, was physically subdued and later arrested on May 8 after allegedly yelling "God is Great" in Arabic and pounding on the cockpit door of American Airlines Flight 1561 from Chicago.
The disturbance occurred as the Boeing 737 carrying 162 passengers was beginning its descent into San Francisco.
Almurisi has been charged with interfering with flight crew members, a felony that carries up to 20 years in prison. He remains in federal custody in Alameda County's Santa Rita Jail after a judge denied bail.
Almurisi, who does not speak English, entered the country legally in late 2009.
He carried no luggage on the plane and has relatives in Vallejo who did not know he was coming, prosecutors said.
The natural reaction of any panicky airline passenger — to pound on the cockpit door and scream “God is great.” Sure.

The State Department has awarded 1,011 special “diversity visas” allowing Yemeni nationals to immigrate to the United States since 2000, the year 17 US sailors were killed when the USS Cole was attacked by terrorists in the Yemeni port of Aden.
The “diversity visas” are designed to encourage immigration from countries that do not otherwise send significant numbers of immigrants to the United States.
The State Department roster of all countries whose nationals have received “diversity visas” to immigrate to the United States in 2010, for example, shows that 2 of these immigrants will be from Luxembourg, 3 from the Solomon Islands, 4 from French Guiana, 5 from Reunion, 6 from Cape Verde, 7 from Malta, 8 from Guinea-Bissau, 9 from Comoros, 10 from Suriname—and 72 from Yemen. Nationals of the four states listed by the State Department as state sponsors of terrorism—Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria—also received “diversity visas” from the State Department to immigrate to the United States in 2010. These include 98 from Syria, 298 from Cuba, 1,084 from Sudan, and 2,773 from Iran...

Rageh Almurisi sounds like the type of person that should not have been granted legal entry into the US.
