Caylee's Law
Townhall.com ^ | July 16, 2011 | Bill O'Reilly

Posted on 07/16/2011 6:16:33 AM PDT by Kaslin

The moment Casey Anthony walks out of jail in Florida, America will be a poorer place. This woman's negligence and apathy toward her precious 2-year-old daughter, Caylee, eliminate her as a responsible citizen. She's simply another barbarian who couldn't even be bothered to protect her baby.

Debate Anthony's acquittal on murder charges all you want, the woman is not innocent. She should not be walking free. Therefore, another adjustment must be made to serve justice in America and to protect the kids: Caylee's Law.

At this point, 18 states are pursuing new laws that would make it a felony not to report a missing child within a couple of days. Each state is deciding the timeframe. The intent of the law is to compel derelict parents like Anthony to alert authorities should something bad happen to their children. You may remember that Anthony told no one her daughter was missing for 31 days. If Caylee's Law had been in place, Anthony would be going to prison right now.

There are Americans who object to any new laws, believing the states already have enough power. But when it comes to protecting defenseless kids, that point of view doesn't wash. A few years ago, 9-year-old Jessica Lunsford was murdered by convicted child sex offender John Couey, who never should have been walking free. After that horrible crime, 44 states passed a version of Jessica's Law mandating long prison terms for convicted child rapists. The result: No longer is much of America plagued by misguided judges giving heinous child predators light sentences.

You have to wonder why Hawaii, Illinois, New Jersey, Vermont, Idaho and Colorado have failed to pass Jessica's law. You also have to question why anyone would oppose Caylee's Law. There is simply no excuse for any parent or guardian not to alert authorities when a child under the age of 12 goes missing. And 12 is the age most states are targeting for the new law.

With the Supreme Court legalizing virtual child pornography, and the Internet providing child predators with the most powerful, perverse tool they've ever had, society must come to grips with the danger presented to all children.

Anthony is a narcissistic sociopath who got away with the death of her daughter. Whatever happened, she bears an enormous responsibility. There is no way this woman should be walking free, and all Americans should shun her.

The larger question of protecting kids remains frustrating. This week, 8-year-old Leiby Kletzky was walking home from day camp in a secure Brooklyn neighborhood. Authorities later found the little boy's dismembered body. Police believe the man responsible will be convicted of murder.

But that's what many of us believed about Casey Anthony. It didn't happen. So we must provide even more protection for the children of this country. Pass Caylee's Law now.

Pish, Bill. You probably think murderers won’t buy or use a gun illegally, too.

While politicians debate this stupid law there are 5 attorneys contemplating a defense strategy to get around it. My experiences with mother's is that if their child is out of their site in public for 30 seconds they panic. An irresponsible parent or one who has “allegedly” disposed of their child's body is not apt to think about this law.

Got to be "careful" here. Yes what happened was almost as bad as it can get with mother/child. HOWEVER, letting emotion guide the legislative process will lead you directly to tyranny. Next, there will be a government panel to decided on a mothers' fitness (called a jury in this instance) .. then you'll have to have a license to be a mother ($50 to the state for the certificate) It's a slippery slope upon which this proposed legislation stands.

In this case many of us find ourselves TOTALLY sympathetic to the daughter and NONE of us want to see this happen again ... but this is how the libs use us ... and in the end, this promotes a government that controls the people. I'm not defending this mother, she's as bad as it gets ... but don't make it worse in the long run with more "government control."

You either are a Conservative or not! It is an instance like this that tests your conservativism. IMHO

It’s a good law, they should pass it. The stupid murderous slut would be in jail now if there were that law. This dumbed down Jury could have found her guilty of that one, to bad it isn’t retroactive.

I agree with you completely.
We all know this woman is most likely guilty, but this law won’t make her pay, it just paves the way for possible abuse of the citizenry.
I could see this law morphing into something bad easily.

“What do you mean? You didn’t call the authorities for over an hour? You were panicked and looking for yourself?”

“The stupid murderous slut would be in jail now if there were that law.”

What makes you think that? Who determines when, exactly, the child went missing? If a child lives alone with her mother, who’s keeping track of the child’s whereabouts? When does the missing-clock start ticking? The fact that some neighbor or some grandparent HASN’T seen the child isn’t evidence of the child’s absence. And that’s just the missing-side of this inane law. Add the same reasoning to the dead-side.

So Casey lies and says she saw the child just yesterday. That’s all this law will accomplish. Anyone with any common sense knows Casey killed her own child. She told lies to cover it up. So another lie isn’t going to be much of a hurdle to circumvent this new law.

...this promotes a government that controls the people.

Thank you!

That's what I was thinking ,too. Excuse me while I put on my Hard Hearted Hannah hat, but I grow weary of everytime there is some horror occurring there's a knee jerk reaction to legislate it. In some cases, it might be correct, but most times it's not.

There might be a few people stupid enough to think, “Whoops, I just killed Tom! I’d better call the police and report him ‘missing’ so I don’t risk a fine for failing to report it!”

Yeah......if they are that stupid they won’t get away with the crime anyway. What a joke this new law is.

Would it make everyone happy if Casey Anthony got a $100 fine and three months’ probation for “Failure to Report”? And that’s if they could prove it.

Stupid, stupid, stupid idea.

Thanks for the common sense post. The media drives the emotions and we see the result of it. NOTHING good comes out of the media - yet, so many fall for it every time.

> letting emotion guide the legislative process

Emotion has also been guiding jurisprudence, so much so, that I do not think it can be correctly called jurisprudence anymore.

There are already laws against abuse, neglect, and murder.

If the state could not present sufficient evidence to convict on these charges, then that’s where the problem lies.

There is no need for yet another emotion-based law named after yet another unfortunate victim of stupidity and lust.

The only positive I can see coming from this would be the benefit to law enforcement. The child is found sooner, thus crime evidence is fresher, easier to determine cause of death, etc. rather than clues going cold week after week. So I can see law enforcement pushing for this. But I doubt it will result in protecting more children. Stupid idea.

If you are going to murder your child put her in a garbage bag and dump her in a swampy wooded area, are ya really gonna obey THIS new law? I think not. I agree with you, it is a stupid idea.

Although true....isn't the point that this law would have enabled the 'so called jury' to find her guilty of 'not reporting her child missing' and therefore enable the law to keep her in prison for a long time?

...for the next baby she wants to kill?

..or the next Casey?....

Am I too simple...?
