I am all for irradiation of food. Completely. It is one hell of a lot cheaper and more effective than carting and storing stuff in fridges everywhere.

Yeah, I know about free radicals. I was a nuclear medicine tech for fifteen years...

We have people who put the risk from free radicals in food so far above the threat of food-borne illnesses because WE TAKE REFRIGERATION SO DAMNED FOR GRANTED!

Grr.

For a good long while we used to get irradiated beef at the local Giant. Then it disappeared.

I gather once Giant fell into the hands of Belgian and Brit owners they were no longer concerned with food safety.

Now not everybody bought irradiated beef ~ but people who understand the process and the value a reduced pathogen load has did.

Frankly, if the stubbornly ignorant die and fail to breed we have not really lost have we!
