LAFAYETTE, NY (WSYR-TV) New York State Troopers say one man is dead after a motorcycle crash near McClary Road and Route 11 in LaFayette on Saturday.
New York State Police say 55-year-old Philip Contos of Parish was part of a protest against motorcycle helmets.
Police say several motorists from the group ABATE (American Bikers Aimed for Education) of Onondaga County had come together to make a point that they didn't need their helmets.
The group was driving south on Route 11 in Lafayette around 1:30 p.m., headed toward Lake Como, just south of the Finger Lakes.
Police say Contos suddenly hit the brakes and lost control of the motorcycle.
According to troopers, Contos was thrown over his handlebars and hit the pavement as his 1993 Harley Davidson motorcycle skidded toward the guardrail.
Contos was still alive when crews arrived at the scene and was transported to Upstate University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
According to police, Contos was not wearing his helmet, as required by law. Witnesses say this decision was part of the protest.
Police say that based on evidence at the scene and from doctors, Contos would have survived if he had been wearing a DOT-Approved helmet.

Geez...FReeper’s memories are too long (if you are referring to my objection, a few months back, to the gladiator course...now being taught...as ‘fun’) If that’s not what you are referring to, I’m lost.
Aaah...no problem.
It’s very hard to type anything lengthy on an iPhone so I gave a Cliff-Note reply.
I apologize for the confusion....:)
That’s not a helmet.
Have you gotten your head stuck in a bucket again?
[yes, I *can* see you from here]
;D
Could’ve been except I’ve had it happen when I’m home on the PC, too.
Figured it was another temporary FR glitch/bonus feature.
[now I’m going nuts trying to remember *who* I was actually trying to post to and I’m too lazy to re-read the whole thread again]
;]
If you get into a skid, which forces you (can’t argue with the laws of physics) out from behind the steering wheel of your pick-up, on a two-lane highway, it certainly could become my god damned business, if I am in the oncoming lane.
Just sayin’...
(And yes, it is stuck too.)
Does all that mean I have to go out to the Yuke and bring my broadsword back in?
I was thisclose.
LOL
btw...you have BOC on your FR homepage..haven't heard that for years so I want to thank you for posting it.
TC Sal
I have to ask: Does this mean that in England or Australia daily driving is an invitation to a fight, or are they all left handed over there? Color me perplexed by your sword metaphor.
I have dual discs on the front and *2* Wilwood discs on the back.
If you think that’d stop a 3000 pound car fast, try ‘em on a 1000 pound trike.
Shhhhh!
I wanna be able to take a sword with me when grocery shopping!
I’ve printed his post as a legal precedent/defense!
Understood.
The windows are dirty.
Now, if anyone can give advice on removing a spittoon from their head I am all ears.
“If you get into a skid, which forces you (cant argue with the laws of physics) out from behind the steering wheel of your pick-up, on a two-lane highway”
Never happen, i’ve driven race cars all my life and there is nothing that will force me from behind the wheel.
The sterring wheel is my protection in a headon or rollover which i’ve done more than once in street machines.
Heat the spittoon and freeze your head.
One or the other will change size and slip out/off.
[wait...what?]
Why, yes, yes I was referring to your completely ill-informed and factually incorrect objection to the actual events of history, yes. :P
As I said to Joe 6-Pack in a private message at the time, without the assimilation and aid of the Roman Empire, the following scenario would have been very likely: Christianity would start getting overrun starting in about 750 after the Islamics finished their civil wars. After that, it would probably have been a tiny minority religion starting in about 1258, after the Islamics pissed off my ancestors and thereby got overrun by a bunch of guys on ponies. Christianity would have been a cult offshoot of (further reduced by that time, due to Persian and then Islamic overrunning) Judaism and would have ended up in the also-ran religions right next to it, and after Druidism.
Well who doesn't? I'm miffed enough that I'm licensed to carry a gun, but I can't carry an automatic knife, because you know, you could hurt somebody with one of those.
There have been so many nearly hallucinogenic posts on this thread, how could anybody be blamed for “misinterpretation”?
LOL
BOC....*still* “on tour forever”.
I just realized I haven’t seen them in an least a year.
Gotta go check out their gig list, now...:))
[happy to have you watching my back, Outlaw Woman]
Ok.
I have a dewar of liquid nitrogen and a torch with a rosebud tip.
Good thing I’ve been drinking or this wouldn’t seem like such a good idea.
Just make sure the Missus has 911 on speed dial and the dog is safely out of the room.
[OMG...I can’t look!]
