the split occurred soon after the death of Muhammad.
yet, MOST of the following 1300 years,
there WAS a Caliphate.

so, that wouldn’t stop it.
and, if the Sunnis pick a descendant of Muhammad
(and millions claim that, so it’s easy)
then the Shias would accept him also.

(there is actually less difference between Sunni and Shia,
than between Anglican and Catholic.
the primary disagreement, is over whether the Caliph
should be a descendant of Muhammad or not.)

The “arab spring” IS a sunni-shia war. Make no mistake about it.
