Mitt Romney easily survived his first debate of the 2012 primary with barely a nick to his early frontrunner status.
Tarred as a flip-flopping phony during his 2008 White House bid, Romney looked at ease during the two-hour live forum, and none of his lesser-known rivals made him squirm. Eager to make pleasing first impressions on a national audience, they all passed when handed opportunities to attack Romney.
A picture of the former Massachusetts governor and corporate executive in an open-collared shirt and tie -- posted on Twitter just minutes before the debate in an obvious attempt at campaign image-making -- rang true.
((snip))
The best moment for Cain, the only candidate who has never served in public office, was when he gleefully proclaimed at the start of the debate, "I am not a politician."

Whether you like him or not, I won’t vote for him, I believe Newt Gingrich came off as the most robust speaker.
I thought Romney looked so canned tonight. Faker than usual. And that dopey odd smile he has and blank stare while others answer questions is just creepy.
Yeah, me too. I agree.
But I loved Michele after tonight. So I am voting for her unless, like Perry comes on with a bang.
The media chant begins... Pick Romney, Pick Romney...
Seriously? Every other candidate on that stage should have turned to Romney and said, ‘Well, we’ve now got plenty of mandates, government mandates, which you said on a very similar stage that you support... Care to flip flop on that opinion too?’
Honestly thought the whole lot looked and acted like puppies in the pound, who could be the cuties and get taken home by the family. We’ve had DECADES of cute puppies leading the party - don’t need any more Republicans who’ll jump up on the liberal bed and curl up on the feet and sleep through four years, or worse, beg next to the table for scraps of conservative agenda.
Give me a real fighter. Reagan’s mantra was not to attack a fellow Republican. Unfortunately, most of them are no longer conservatives, and need to be attacked.
Romney looked bad tonight... I don’t know if it was the HD cameras or what... but I have never seen him look so bad.
Gracious? No thanks - Americans want/need a FIGHTER.
They are following orders in order to make the mutt appear as a thoroughbred. Only a dog would follow that order!
I don’t trust Newt either.
Bachmann was campaigning.
Cain was pretty ineffective.
Newt nailed a few salient historical points but it was obvious he was trying not to sound like a politician.
Pawlenty was pretty boring.
Ron Paul was adamant about liberty, free enterprise, the Constitution, border security and my wife' favorite.
Santorum was sincere, well prepared and had the best balance.
Ron Paul is a kook and he sounds like one every time he speaks. I don’t know if there was a clear winner but it surely wasn’t him.
I thought Palin did quite well... despite not being there.
The LSM falling all over itself to crown Mittens.
lol!
“I thought Romney looked so canned tonight. Faker than usual.”
I will take your word for it, though it is hard to imagine it being even worse.
Great comment! Best of this thread.
That was not Reagan’s mantra. Look it up. For goodness sakes he took on a sitting Republican president in 1976.
Consider the source.
No difference this time around. Willard remains a phony and a fraud!
No chance I vote for Romney. He’s the GOP “Slick Willie”. Anyone with a brain REALLY think he’ll do what he says he would do if elected? He won’t even come close.
But I tell ya what really fried me tonight. Pawlenty was given a chance to go after Romney on RomneCare and he backed off of it. I could not believe it.
I say again, if Romney is nominated I will not vote for him. NO chance. He’s a Blue Dog Dem at best.
