Broward chief judge resigns to join so-called “foreclosure mill”

Broward Chief Judge Victor Tobin will resign his post June 30 to work for the Law Offices of Marshall C. Watson in Fort Lauderdale.

In an e-mail sent Tuesday afternoon to judges and judicial assistants in the 17th Circuit Court, Tobin said he notified Gov. Rick Scott of his pending resignation earlier in the day.

“I wish to express my sincere thanks to each judge for permitting me the honor of being your Chief Judge during the last four years,” Tobin wrote. “I appreciate the confidence you placed in me.”

The Law Offices of Marshall C. Watson settled a Florida attorney general’s investigation into its foreclosure practices in March, agreeing to pay $2 million but admitting no wrongdoing.

The settlement came two weeks after federal mortgage backer Freddie Mac pulled its cases from the Watson firm, which filed thousands of foreclosures throughout Florida.

Marshall C. Watson, president and chief executive officer of the Law Offices of Marshall C. Watson, said in a statement this morning that Tobin’s hiring is in line with the firm’s “commitment to superior service.”

“Chief Judge Victor Tobin has served Broward County honorably for the past 15 years. His leadership will serve our firm very well, particularly in overseeing our managing attorneys and ensuring best practices and procedure are enhanced.”

Foreclosure defense attorneys were reeling from the news of Tobin’s resignation this morning.

Nothing untoward about this, folks. Please continue watching Dancing With The Stars while your homes are foreclosed on. Pay no attention to the fact that your chief judge just quit to work for the tip of the spear pointed at you. His term as chief judge was probably very honest and full of integrity. He will not use any of his connections or the system he put in place to his new firm’s advantage. This just in: Supreme Court Justice John Roberts has just quit his position to become in-house counsel for the Chinese Embassy.

Tobin was a successful attorney before he was a judge. He just wants to make money. What’s wrong with that?

I suspect there was pressure from lenders for this firm to get their act together. What better way to regain their confidence than to hire the chief judge?

Don’t be surprised if judges are more careful on cases involving the former judge’s associates; and they also be jealous.

What’s wrong with that?

In this day and age...nothing. He'll still be working for the banks but he'll have to give his robe back.

considering he is instramental with setting up one of the state’s rocket dockets which rubber stamp forclosures using senile retired state courge judges. A good deal.

Also Watson’s firm is one of the firms being investigated by the AG for fraud.

This is a very bad career move.

more likely they will give him a free pass or he is more there for the next test case about to go up on appeal. The foclosure mills need cover for their fraud. I doubt he will be doing the small potato cases, he is there for credibility and as a lobbyist.

I had to laugh! Have you read the Rolling Stone article about the rocket docket in Jacksonville FL? Those judges aren’t even reading all the case info before making decisions.!
