Jeff Bezos Calls Sales Tax Requirements On Amazon Unconstitutional
Slashdot ^ | 5/17/11 | timothy

Steve1960 writes

"Amazon.com chief Jeff Bezos says the online retailer won't collect tax from most of its 90 million customers until Congress clearly mandates it. Although a growing number of states are demanding that Amazon collect and remit tax on sales within their borders, such demands are 'interference in interstate commerce' and prohibited by the Constitution, Bezos said."

Given the shredded state of the constitution these days, it's not certain he'll prevail over the greedy corrupt (or at least inept) institutions called state governments.

I find it ironic that this big lib is now counting on the Republicans in the House to NOT pass a tax on internet sales

Agreed. If you live in some states, their state income tax forms will ask individuals to declare and pay sales taxes on anything they bought on the internet or by mail order.

But that’s really difficult or impossible to enforce, unless they want to send spies around to check people’s mail or UPS deliveries. And I’m not really sure if it’s even legal.

Jeffrey Bozos donated to Patty Murray (D) $4,800 on 6/19/09, Maria Cantwell (D) $2000 on 4/4/01, Patty Murray (D) $2000 in '03, Maria Cantwell (D) $4,200 on 6/14/05, $2000 to Patrick Leahy (D) on 1/18/98, $1000 to John Conyers (D) on 10/18/00.

$16,000 to Democrats.

You can bet your ass they are working on it, whether it's legal or not.

All they care about is their "cut".

I've got a better idea. Why not pass a 87% sales tax and completely grind all business to a halt throughout the country.

Hey, hey, hey! Slow down! You don't want to encourage our current group of "leaders." You know the ones who think that 1984 and Animal Farm are "How To" manuals!!!!

He’s always been a liberal. Heck, I knew that in about 1996.

Looks like those are all homestaters and/or people who are on committees that could regulate Amazon.

He also funded an effort to defeat a state income tax, gives money to the Reason Foundation. Every biography I’ve read of him says he’s not very interested in politics except when it affects Amazon but to the extent he cares about politics he’s a libertarian.

Many many years ago, New York State Governor Mario Cuomo (father of the incumbent) used to send NYS agents into New Jersey, to write down the license plates of New York residents, to try and collect some kind of sales tax or something......

This would not be breaking any kind of new ground.

Oh, yeah. And the Massachusetts police used to check for Mass. license plates in the parking lot at the state liquor store in New Hampshire.

That’s mostly a scare tactic, though. How much does it cost to send a police officer on such a job, and then have people waiting at the toll booths to check license plate numbers?

In Cuomos case, it wasn't a scare tactic, they didn't announce it or publicize it, they simply did it, and then it came out....

He was one true lowlife......

That he was. He was the guy who invented, "I'm personally opposed to abortion, but . . . ." And every leftist Catholic politician from Teddy to Nancy to Andrew has imitated him ever since.
