College grads become 'boomerangs,' return home after graduation

RALEIGH, N.C. - After college graduation, some students will begin their jobs, others will pursue another degree, but a growing number will head back where they started home.
According to a poll by Twentysomething, Inc., 85 percent of college graduates will move home. Thats up from 67 percent in 2006.
Brian Cutchin, a North Carolina State University senior set to graduate Saturday, is one of those so-called boomerangs.
I didn't think it would be this tough, I thought getting a degree from NC State would be good, but I guess with the economy downturn that happened, things changed, he said.
NC States Career Center Director Carol Shroeder said shes familiar with the term boomerang.
"I feel so sorry for their parents. It's very difficult. Obviously it's a good way to save money. It's a good way to get support, she said.
Shroeder said shes received reports that employers are increasing their hiring, but she said its to early to say for sure. While she said the number of jobs posted online is up, those positions may not be exactly what students want.
"Some students say, 'Well, if I take a job well beneath my educational capabilities then I'm doomed forever. No, I think the hiring market will be much more understanding of why you had to take a job that was not a particularly good job, she said.

And I you.
You think less of me because my parents made me find my own way, instead of coddling me by allowing me to live at home and not work after receiving my B.S.?
Interesting. Are you sure you’re on the right site?
I agree with this. The article was about grads who go to live at home and won’t work at jobs that demean their status as graduates, wasn’t it?
The world needs service workers and warehouse workers, and I was both of these with a college degree.
I agree. There are a lot of good, young people and they, just like other demographic groups, are going to have it rough. I worry about my kids and what kind of future they will have. Some of the comments from our “peers” are ridiculous.
More “Hopey Changey” for the little heads full of mush. Their Messiah...will lead them to Utopia.(That is...Nowhere).
Twenty+ years ago, my brother got a civil engineering degree. During school he worked long, hot summers as a grunt on a road-paving crew, plus did some construction and house-painting. People were begging him to come work for them when he graduated, I think in part because he was willing to work those “grunt” jobs. (Of course, graduating at the tail end of Reagan’s economy helped.) He’s making six figures now as a construction project manager. He’s one of the hardest-working people I have ever seen.
My guys have worked construction and manufacturing. They aren’t slackers. Each has a nice retirement account but that can-do attitude isn’t getting them anywhere.
The job market is bad.
You mean the screaming college idiots who voted for this cretan? Welcome to socialism where the useful idiots serve thier king and get nothing in return.
Guess that vote for the won didn’t work out, eh?
No, I think less of you because you are not willing to help your kids in the worst depression since the 30s.
Something like 70% of these Millenial morons supported Obozo, and you can be sure that nearly 100% still blame Bush for their troubles.
This is not a new thing, happens every time the economy gets tough. For anyone who remembers Carter and the late 70s and who graduated from college anytime between the late 70s to around the mid-80s, you all know it was tough to find a job then too. I remember my senior year, getting close to graduation and finding almost no employer recruiters on campus, and damn few job postings in the papers (no job websites back then). So, you beat the bushes and found something, then worked your way up. You might have changed companies/jobs a few times, might have even gone back to school to get a different kind of skill or degree. And many of us did move back into the house for a year or two (paying rent, of course). So buck up kiddo’s, and if you play your cards right you will make out OK.
Sounds like your kids benefitted from some great parents!
You have every reason to be proud!
Besides, it ain’t bragging when you have done it!
;-)
My son went for a degree that suited him. Just because it’s Engineering doesn’t mean that ALL other degrees are garbage.
I think that you can tell which ones are garbage and which ones aren’t. I gave a partial listing earlier. I think that you would concur. At least I would hope so.
Anyone with a college degree, and many without, can work in China, Korea and seversal other places teaching English for a decent wage plus room & board.

And the last I checked, the US military was still hiring.
WTG, Mom!
