A 12 year old child cannot legally buy cigarettes or alcohol. But he can have access to pictures and films of gay sex, s&m, and bestiality, at the touch of a button. Does this make sense?

The stores that sell hustler or penthouse, do not sell magazines to people under the age of 18. Why shouldn't the same rules apply on the internet? Bestiality is also illegal in most states, just like child porn. Then why is the stuff allowed on the internet?

The porn industry has severely harmed America's image in the world.

Then there is Japan where there is a thriving vending machine business selling used little girls panties and possession of kiddy porn is not a crime.

Does America's Internet Pornography Industry Hurt America's Image in Foreign Countries?
Does Rampant Prostitution in Foreign Countries Hurt Their Image?

The porn industry has severely harmed America's image in the world.
Woe to Thailand and several Far East countries.
Their image is equivalent to a Helen Thomas picture.

Having grown up in an international city, traveled a bit, lived abroad for years, and talked to many people in all those places who were visiting from still other places, the short answer I’d give is, yes.

Do Americans really want to be thought of as the world’s favorite whores? And if prostitution is illegal, as I think it should be, than how can filming people being paid for sex acts be legal, rather than evidence of crime?

Parents have the ability to control their children's Internet access. However, some parents don't exhort any control over what their children access because mentally they're little more than children themselves. Does this make sense?

You sound like a Prohibitionist from ages past. The desire to control things always bites back.

America did not create pornography.
America is not the source of the rawest pornography (there are still laws here against obscenity, unlike many other countries).
America allows pornography because America allows free speech, a fact that should ENHANCE its image abroad, not hurt it.
America should never sacrifice freedoms to earn the world’s favor.

Much of the porn viewed on the internet is free, so I doubt your plan would work. Its ready access by children may actually be its death; a large part of porn’s appeal is its salaciousness, the “forbidden fruit” nature of its subject. If kids have been exposed to it for years, it removes much of that mystique and renders it just another ho-hum subject on the internet.

He says that the porn industry causes many foreigners to have contempt for America, as a nation of moral degenerates.

Muslims are calling us moral degenerates? LOL

On a thread several months or years ago, a study was published that showed that a very large percentage of porno site hits came from the Middle East. Physician, heal thyself.

I have only stumbled across one pornographic image by accident in internet searches. I’ve never stumbled across a pornographic video.

If these Middle Easterners are seeing enough porn to hold our culture in contempt, then they’re looking for it and watching it. It’s part of their culture too.

It’s true that they problably don’t have many porn stars there, because they would be stoned, ladies first.

What’s not part of their culture is “Let he who is without sin cast the first stone.” Maybe that seems contemptible and weak to them also.

As much as i hate what porn does to our image,,, regulating the internet is EXTREMELY dangerous.

The wide open internet is the thing that the conspirators destroying America utterly fear. They fear it even more than our guns.

Imagine it is 1982. We wouldn’t know a WORD about Obama and the birth certificate, or his criminal associates. Dan Rathers memo would have been successful. The FR expert could have told his friends and family,, but try to get it into a paper or on the news.
TEA would have been almost impossible before. NO way to quickly communicate. And for those who think it would stop at porn, please point to one single government effort that doesnt IMMEDIATLY expand.

For a perfect examply look at Homeland Security (the dept with the creepy NAZI name). It was to keep Islamic Terrorists off planes and to prevent another 9/11. Now they are looking at the pirating of movies, hiring muslim brotherhood symapthizers, headed by a bull-dyke who wants open borders, and they think white, Ron Paul backing, gun-owning citizens are the most imminent threat. They are working daily to root out islamaphobia and anti-mexican attitudes. No, they will not stay long on just porn.

As distastful as it is,, the last thing we should ever want is the US GOVERNMENT to have an excuse to regulate content on the internet. The missionaries will ahve to do the best they can,, this is FAR too important of a wepon to risk losing.

“He says that the porn industry causes many foreigners to have contempt for America, as a nation of moral degenerates”

Your friend is clueless. Those holier than though types are the biggest consumers of porn. Like Utah in USA http://www.deseretnews.com/article/705288350/Utah-No-1-in-online-porn-subscriptions-report-says.html (they win the Prozac race too)

Or Pakistan http://freethinker.co.uk/2010/07/14/pakistans-dirty-little-porn-secret/

Why?

I do not favor completely outlawing pornography. But I believe that all internet websites should be blocked off, with access being made possible only to adults who have credit cards. What do you think of the idea?

I think it would cost a huge amount of money to develop and and deploy technology to do this. It would ultimately fail to accomplish the objective, but would give the government the same kind of control and monitoring capability over the average citizen as that enjoyed by the Chinese government, and the likelihood of it being abused is about 100%.

The porn industry has severely harmed America's image in the world.

More likely, the export of mainstream entertainment has harmed America's image in the world.

Your point about sellers of porn magazines already applies to the US-based commercial sites on the internet.

It's evident what you really want is to regulate free speech on the Internet. Parents have tools to regulate what their children have access to online. It doesn't mean their children won't be exposed to things when outside of their direct supervision but that's always been so.

>>> Does America’s Internet Pornography Industry Hurt America’s Image in Foreign Countries?

Misguided question. America’s porn industry to a substantial degree has moved to Mexico. Ross Perot foresaw this threat to the US economy, when he warned that NAFTA will cause a giant sucking sound as jobs go south.

“Nobody can define what porn is,” nobody except Hugh Hefner, Larry Flynt, Bob Guccione, Max Hardcore, Al Goldstein, Steven Hirsch, Jenna Jameson, Tera Patrick, adult bookstore owners, adult internet providers, and all of the above’s respective audiences. Most sensible people can define porn, except for the nine individuals on the Supreme Court.
