Ivory Coast: Presidential residence 'taken' in Abidjan

Fighting in Ivory Coast's main city, Abidjan, has taken a new turn with reports that entrenched ruler Laurent Gbagbo's residence has been captured.

Forces loyal to Alassane Ouattara, the country's internationally recognised president, said they had taken the building after a day of fierce combat.

A spokesman for Mr Ouattara, Patrick Achi, told the BBC it was not yet clear whether Mr Gbagbo had been inside.

Heavy weapons fire could be heard again early on Tuesday, reports say.

On Monday, UN and French helicopters attacked targets near the presidential residence.

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon said the attacks were ordered to defend civilians and were not a declaration of war on Mr Gbagbo.

Another “Islamic Republic” being established. The Christians will be killed or forced to emigrate. The Muslims will win all future elections.

I can understand how Obama is pushing everywhere for an Islamic caliphate. I have come to the understanding the man is a secret islamist bent on destroying the country.

There is no other excuse for the way he is ravageing every ally we’ve ever had in the ME that has ever stood up to Iran, and working hard to put in more radicals.

By the time he leaves the WH he will have set us on the path to WWIII. People have no concept the disaster he is setting up.

But how do other countries not see this? France, England, etc - Do they really think they will escape?

I believe the West’s inaction in Africa is simply a continuation of Margaret Sanger’s policies; these wars, combined with AIDS, are simply accomplishing what abortion & contraception couldn’t. The AIDS stats (particularly in South Africa) are staggering; there is no way for a country to deal with those costs. On the other hand, the silence in the western media about the war in the Congo (referred to by Africans as WWIII - it has killed upwards of 2 million already, with up to seven African nations engaged) speaks volumes about the people who said “never again” after Rwanda. Soldiers & civilians are being killed in the fighting, while crops aren’t being sown - but we’ll send free laptops to Africa.
