This is probably the most important ongoing revolt in the Middle East right now. If Assad were to fall, it would reverberate all over the region, and greatly weaken the Iranian regime. Typically, it is getting far less coverage than the other crises, but well follow it here. Latest updates:
Daraa. According to eyewitnesses, the whole city (Population: ~100,000) is up in arms. Tens of thousands are on the street demanding freedom and liberty. Many are aware that the French Foreign Ministry, the US State Department, and the world is watching what theyre doing. This video shows Syrian security men stopping ambulances from reaching the injured. The whole town is surrounded by tanks aimed at the city.
Jassem. Unconfirmed reports that demonstrations have started in Jassem, a small town close to the Golan Heights Northwest of Daraa.
Qamoshli. This video shows demonstrations in Qamoshli March 20, 2011.
Damascus. Download this video to see security men beating worshippers outside the Omayyad Mosque in Damascus. The video was taken using a secret pinhole camera.
Madaya. This video was taken yesterday of a small demonstration in the town of Madaya on the outskirts of Damascus and not too far from the Lebanese borders. Madaya is located south of al-Zabadani, which is a suspected stronghold of Hezbollah and the Military Security of Assad.
Syria. Rumors are circulating that young Syrian army recruits have express unity with the people of Syria against the regime in the form of not firing any live ammunition against their own people.
Update
It will be interesting to ask our strategists/policy makers why, if its so important to defend the Libyan people against Qadaffi, it isnt at least equally important to defend the Syrian people against Assad, and of course the Iranian people against Khamenei and Ahmadinejad. At least the Iranians get a forceful speech from the president, and some sanctions. The Syrians barely get a mention in the popular press.
Heres the latest from the Reform Party of Syria:
Daraa. Video of another Syrian skilled in Daraa tonight as security men, wearing civilian clothes, have infiltrated the city.
Dreaded 4th Battalion has entered the city of Daraa. Tanks have taken positions in the town center and the Mahata area. Wholesale arrests by name of Syrians who took to the streets. Some of the latest are: Issa al-Mossalameh, Mohammad al-Moussalmeh, Shoukri al-Mahamid, Issam al-Mahamid.
Also, dead today is a 14-year old boy, Mounzer al-Moussalmeh, who succumbed to his injuries resulting from the tear gas used. WE ASK DOCTORS WITHOUT BORDERS TO SEND PEOPLE TO DARAA TO INVESTIGATE THE TEAR GAS USED AGAINST UNARMED CIVILIANS.
Douma. On the outskirts of Damascus, Al-Arabiya confirmed another demonstration today in support of the people of Daraa.
Jassem. Video of demonstrations in Jassem today in support of the people of Daraa.
Dail. Video of a night demonstration in Dail (Wait to the end of the video) in support of the people of Daraa. Dail is a town north of Daraa.
Nawa. Unconfirmed reports of large demonstrations in the town of Nawa (Located between Jassem and Dail).
Qamoshli. A video of Syrians protesting at night in Qamoshli. This makes it the 5th city or town today to experience street demonstrations.
Damascus. Tens of Syrians have been detained outside the Omayyad Mosque. Some names: Ammar Shorbaji, Nayef Ayoub Shabban, Moujahed al-Atrash, Ammar badr, Iyad Abdul Kareem Noureddine, etc..
WTF is going on. Is this communist?
I see another Hama on the horizon.
Iranian plane seized in Turkey today with arms on board, inbound Syria.
Also, reports of Iranian Guard soldiers on the ground in Syria. Bodes ill for protestors...
Communists/islamists. A volatile mix.
Maybe mutually beneficial.
For awhile. Until the mullahs show up.
Meanwhile, Obama’s policy is engagement with this loathsome regime responsible for the murder of 100s if not thousands of American soldiers in Iraq for acting as a conduit for Al Qaeda foreign fighters who entered Iraq for 7 years to kill our boys. Obama put an ambassador back into Iraq and made it official policy to again engage this disgusting, vile regime. So I seriously doubt the freedom fighters there are going to get any support from Obumbles.
Its the muslim in the White House orchestrating and choreographing the consolidation of the mideast. It was started with his speech in Cairo, then Indonesia. This Libya thing? He is in there supporting AlQaeda and they dont have their best deal yet thats why the waffling. He is the enforcer.
Look for Hezbollah to pour into Syria en masse if the regime starts to totter and if the Syrian military refuses to brutalize the people. You can bet Iran will send their thug Revolutionary Guard cockroaches in too.
So maybe we’re finally figuring out the algorithm the administration and media are using to determine which thug monsters in the middle east need to leave and which may be safely ignored: The more the Iranian Mullahs like you, the less likely you are to have Zero calling for your ouster.
The only exceptions are the Saudi’s and Bahrain and our dependence on their oil probably makes them exceptions.
Maybe...if Aassad runs out of bullets. A very unlikely scenario
Its bigger than that.
Ezekial wrote about it over 2500 years ago. Its unfolding. You are witnessing. America is now center stage.
Guess the next few scenes...and no cheating!
OK. The World Communisty comes against Israel for starters
Surely, many of them realize that islam is a co-conspirator in the crap & tyranny.
A good thought in the middle of the road. But I smell a Skunk.
There’s a Syria?
This is getting Syrias.
Is that why at their democracy rallies they are chanting Allah Akbar, and death to America?
Sure the monkeys can parrot the words freedom, democracy...but it stops there... lets try rights and liberty.
Then 1200 years starting with Christ to get to the Magna Carta... and then to the Maryland Charter.....and all the culture, Christian culture that defined the underlying infrastructure of what we call Democracy......right into the American constitution.
Sure, they can parrot the language.....
