Seems to me we should expand coal and nat gas drilling ASAP and build more nuclear plants all places we don't have quakes or tsunamis. IIRC, we've never had damage here in MN from a quake.

In terms of energy policy, as in so much else, the Obama administration is in leaderless disarray. The only thing it seems capable of doing is delaying and shutting down energy production. As soon as some promising new supply pops up, like the shale gas capable of fueling America for the next century, the Obama EPA is there launching an environmental study designed to regulate and restrict it. At the moment when new energy supplies are most needed, there are no plans to increase supplies -- only plans to reduce them. One would almost think that this President wants to bring America to its knees.
Meanwhile, for the Chinese and other fast-growing economies, it's full speed ahead on new energy projects. Chinese oil companies are pursuing new oil and gas exploration on a global scale, even in the mainland U.S. They are buying up oil and gas leases in Asia, Africa, Latin America, Europe, and North America, including just offshore Louisiana in the Gulf of Mexico.
But China is not limiting its options to petroleum. It is acquiring vast reserve of coal, importing U.S. coal that environmentalists have put off-limits to electric utilities in the United States and securing ownership of coal mines in Australia, Asia, and Latin America. The purchase of Felix Resources by China's Yanzhou Coal in December 2009 was the largest coal acquisition in Australian history, but it was by no means the last. Asian buyers are now competing for another big prize: Whitehaven Coal. Soon, even if American policymakers were to wake up to the threat we face, there will be no more major coal properties available for purchase.

There's good reason for this: unlike conventional uranium-fueled reactors, LFTR's can't "melt down" and also no longer need expensive cooling towers or the reactor located near a big body of water, which means high levels of safety and far more flexibility in terms of reactor location.
But the most important thing is that China does have large thorium deposits, thanks to the fact the tailings of rare earth metal mining (China is a huge producer of rare earth minerals) contains a large amount of this element. They might as well put it to good use.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Tuesday that all seven of the country's nuclear power plants which began operation before 1980 would be provisionally shut down.
She also told a news conference that all German reactors would undergo checks and all safety questions about the plants would be answered by June 15.
Merkel did not say when the older plants would be shut down.

Germany doesn't use oil for power either. This is very unlikely to effect oil price. But I would guess natural gas units typically used for peak are going to get fired up.

The energy policy is to transform the energy use and industry. That is very obvious.
The wackos have a president, an advocate and had a majority in both houses. They have no drilling. They have pressure on miners. They are developing no gas fracking. They have carbon tax via the EPA. They have massive, unknown how massive, subsidies on various green renewable energy projects.
They have energy policy. The author is just ignorant of them.

Russia and China are cornering the energy market (Russian and Chinese firms are mining uranium and coal on our soil, and drilling for oil right off our coasts). Meanwhile, 0 continues to restrict our energy usage.
